Thispage includes content relating to the Dance of the Dragons, and therefore contains potential spoilers for future seasons of House of the Dragon, as revealed in George R.R. Martin's writings. Anyone wishing to remain completely spoiler free for this prequel series should avoid any pages displaying this tag.

132 AC.[a] King Viserys the Peaceful has passed in his sleep, leaving a succession crisis in his wake.[13] In King's Landing, the Greens have consolidated power through the coronation of the king's firstborn son, King Aegon II Targaryen.[14] In retaliation, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys's designated heir, has been crowned by her Blacks on her house's ancestral island of Dragonstone.[15]

Queen Alicent Hightower's peace terms have been rejected. Prince Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra's uncle and husband, intends to form a foothold within the Riverlands at the castle of Harrenhal, while Lord Corlys Velaryon and his fleet blockade the Gullet with the aid of his wife, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, and her dragon, Meleys. It falls upon Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, to secure a stable rule for his grandson and liege.[15]

The realm is divided. To remind the lords of Westeros of the oath they swore to her and her father two decades prior, Rhaenyra has sent her sons Princes Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon as envoys. Jacaerys is northward bound to treat with Lady Jeyne Arryn of the Eyrie and Lord Cregan Stark of Winterfell, while Lucerys's venture south to Storm's End has culminated in his death between the jaws of Vhagar, ridden by his uncle Prince Aemond Targaryen who will return home a kinslayer.[15]

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miguel Sapochnik, who has entered a deal with HBO to develop new projects, would not continue as showrunner for the second season, and Ryan Condal is the sole showrunner. Sapochnik is credited as executive producer for the entire length of the series, however.[23] Jocelyn Diaz and Ron Schmidt would not return as executive producers[24] and Alexis Raben did not return as producer.[25]

Initially, filming on Season 2 was reported to begin in the fall or winter of 2022.[36] However, Tom Glynn-Carney confirmed in December that year that filming was scheduled to begin in March 2023,[37] though Matt Smith stated in March that filming was scheduled to begin in April 2023.[38] Ewan Mitchell revealed that filming was planned to last eight months.[39]

On March 28, 2023, Deadline revealed that the second season of House of the Dragon would consist of eight episodes, rather than the previously reported ten. Due to this, portions of the plot originally intended for the second season, including a major battle, had been moved to the third season, which was actively being considered for a greenlight by HBO as the second season was approaching its production period.[1]

Filming began on April 11, 2023 at Leavesden Studios[41]. Production returned to Cceres, Spain (which wagain depicts King's Landing), in May 2023.[42] Locations used were San Jorge and San Mateo, Arco de la Estrella, Callejn de la Monja and the Orellana street. Filming also took place at Plaza Mayor de Trujillo.[43]

Like the first season, this season is adapted from Fire & Blood, the history of House Targaryen. It adapts the chapter "The Dying of the Dragons - A Son for a Son" and portions of the chapter "The Dying of the Dragons - The Red Dragon and the Gold."

The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is still a few months away, but it's never too early for more family drama, courtesy of the ambitious, power-hungry Targaryens. The royal family of Westeros takes flight once more in June 2024, but this time in a violent civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Based on Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, House of the Dragon focuses on a small, but impactful piece of Targaryen history that altered the family line forever. Like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon was an immediate success for HBO and is predicted to garner more attention as the events of the source material come to life on the screen. With a House of the Dragon Season 2 release date for June 16, 2024, there's already plenty to know.

Dragon battles and extravagant fantasy costumes aren't easy to create in a short timeline. The creators of House of the Dragon are taking their time to do justice to the explosive story, so the second season won't be released in 2023. In contrast with most television shows in 2023, House of the Dragon wasn't affected by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, so production resumed normally. The release for House of the Dragon Season 2 has been confirmed to be June 16, 2024, and will only be eight episodes long.

House of the Dragon is exclusive to the premium channel HBO and will stream on Max, where subscribers can currently watch the first season. Plans for Max start at $9.99 a month. Like most HBO original shows, every episode will air every Sunday at around 9:00 PM ET.

One major behind-the-scenes shake up for the upcoming season is that co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik resigned from the series, leaving Ryan Condal as the sole showrunner. Directors attached to the second season include Alan Taylor (director of iconic Game of Thrones episodes such as "Baelor" and "Fire & Blood"), Claire Kilner for Episodes 2 and 5, Geeta Vasant Patel for Episodes 3 and 8, Andrij Parekh for Episode 6 and Loni Peristere for Episode 7.

House of the Dragon takes a different approach from Game of Thrones when it comes to its characters. The prequel series features fewer noble houses than Game of Thrones, choosing instead to hone in on the Targaryens and their allies and foes. But Season 2 will expand the lore of Targaryen history by including recognizable families fans are ecstatic to see back on screen.

Returning to the series are the Blacks (Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, their children, and the Velaryons) and the Greens (Alicent Hightower, Otto Hightower, Aegon II Targaryen, Helaena Targaryen, Aemond Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole). Established supporting characters from the first season who will also have to choose their side in Season 2 are Mysaria, Ser Harrold Westerling, Larys Strong, and twins Jason and Tyland Lannister.

The most recent development in casting news reveals House of the Dragon will not only be going North this season, but also showcasing characters from all walks of life. Winter is coming once again with Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, head of House Stark and Warden of the North. Other new House of the Dragon Season 2 cast members include the dragonseeds Addam of Hull, Hugh Hammer, Ulf White, and work-for-hire rat-catchers Blood and Cheese.

HBO generally releases three trailers to promote new seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. House of the Dragon's first official teaser arrived months to a full year in advance, and House of the Dragon Season 2's arrived just in time. Clocking in at a minute and 26 seconds long, the teaser features key moments from the second season without revealing too much about the plot itself. A few surprising moments include the return of Seasmoke, Laenor Velaryon's dragon, Helaena being held at knifepoint and the overwhelming size of Vhagar over an entire field of knights.

Rhaenyra is also taking on a more dominant role, judging by the trailer, embracing traditional Valyrian clothing that resembles dragonkeepers' attire. Her upgraded costuming promises a more accurate portrayal of Rhaenyra's character in the book, who is decked in fine jewelry and maroon gowns. Regardless of her improved look, she appears to be at her lowest point after the death of her son Lucerys and is shown fighting on dragonback for the first time.

In March 2024, HBO released not just one, but two official "dueling" trailers for House of the Dragon Season 2 -- both for Team Green and Team Black. In the official Black trailer, Rhaenyra is seen plotting the war against the Greens, specifically naming her brother Aegon II. Her biggest supporters -- Daemon, Jacaerys, Corlys and Rhaenys -- are by her side, but there's a hint that a betrayal might be in the works. The most interesting tidbit of the trailer is Jacaerys at Castle Black. Last season, he was sent to Winterfell as an envoy, but there was no indication he'd travel further north. It'll be intriguing to see how the second season will develop his friendship with Lord Cregan Stark at the coldest prison in Westeros.

For the Green trailer, there's more than enough footage to confirm the death of a Green, who will remain unnamed for the sake of avoiding spoilers. Both Alicent and Helaena are seen wearing black and riding a carriage through King's Landing, as the people watch. Sticking to their self-obsessed roots, the Greens deny Rhaenyra as the true queen as Otto claims she is fighting this war for vengeance alone and not for the good of the people. But what people are really looking for is a showdown between Aemond and Daemon. The seeds are planted in the trailer, but it's probably too soon for the Battle Above the Gods Eye.
