We asked staffers around our office about what they looked for in messenger bags. Many noted how important it was to keep their personal items secure, others said that organization was key, and some said that looks were just as important as anything else.
This left us with 18 bags to test, each fitting into one of the specific categories above and having some combination of the desired features. We took these 18 bags out into the real world to see how they worked. We stocked each bag with our regular goods, always including a laptop, a laptop charger, a notebook, a book, a phone, pens, and a clothing item. Jordan traditionally kept his bags more orderly, and Haley chaotically threw her life into hers. We traveled both long and short distances with each one, literally taking trains, planes, and automobiles. We consulted our more-serious in-office bikers, as well as a 10-person panel of staffers. In the end, we decided on eight bags, with two in each category.

I pack my 16 inch MacBook Pro, power cord, phone, iPad and pencil, a Field Notes book, and some pens, and I head to the local coffee shop to work. One of the problems I often had over the years is that the bags (backpacks or messenger bags) that I used over the years were better suited for traveling than local work. The difference is that when I travel, I need the bag to hold more than when I am local. When I'm local, I want something lightweight and slim, yet able to carry what I need so I can stay hands-free.
So I went looking around at quite a few bags. Some were slim, but heavy with thick materials. Some were slim, lightweight, but looked like they would last about a week. Some were slim, but held 13" laptops only. Finally, I found one that appear to be slim, lightweight, and could hold my tech.
The one that caught my eye is a messenger bag style called the Outback Solo from Waterfield. They list it on their web site as "OUTBACK SOLO CASE FOR MACBOOK, IPAD, AND SURFACE" (please pardon all uppercase). This review will detail how my first two months have gone using this bag.
However, I did run into a fit problem on day 1. I purchased a magnetic connector for the USB-C power cord, which sticks out about half a centimeter from my laptop. When I forgot to take it out, because frankly, I usually keep it plugged into my laptop so I don't lose it, the laptop barely fits in the bag. Sure, I could get it in, but it felt like it might rip the interior lining. However, after a few days of use, the bag stretched enough to fit this extra width, and it no longer snagged. I was relieved because it seemed like such a small protrusion. To be clear, the 16" MacBook Pro fit great without the USB-C magnetic connector, but with the connector, it was very tight. But after a few days, the bag stretched, and it fits fine now.
This may be the million-dollar question for you. Most laptop bags max out at 15" laptops, so I was concerned that my 16" MacBook pro would never fit, but I was glad to see it did! Waterfield has a variety of sizes for the Outback Solo bag. From their website, they list that "the main compartment in the Outback Solo is custom-fit for devices, like the:"
I was in the market for a great messenger bag, but one with a tech-person in mind. I wanted separate pockets for my laptop, my Moleskine notebook, USB keys and a few magazines. I shopped around, looked at LOTS of backpacks, then messenger bags. Then I remembered the bag company that I got my Amazon Kindle Sleeve from, SFBags.com (Waterfield). They just came out with a new vertical messenger back for laptops.
The only downside is that the bag bulges just a little bit when I add my laptops AC Adapter, which was a little disappointing. Just like laptop manufacturers always seem to design the AC Adapter last, and least, so do bag manufacturers. This bag would have been perfect if it had a little AC Adapter "side car" or something.
It is expensive, ranging from $179 to $259 for the largest size, but the quality is clear as soon as you touch it. It's made locally and it shows. I took the bag with me to Norway and it worked great at every point. It's looking a little weathered, as leather does, but it's still the best looking laptop bag I've ever had. Even Scott Bellware thinks it's fabulous!
The Mosiso PU Leather Laptop Tote is a very stylish bag that comes in a range of colors and is designed to carry a 13-inch laptop or tablet. Reviewers love it, though the snug laptop pocket is a common concern. function ga4_link122() window.dataLayer.push(JSON.parse('"event":"default_event","link_location":"product-grid"')) Read More
Though most classic messenger bags use a traditional crossbody/over-the-shoulder design, the Mosiso Leather Tote Bag is more like a large tote or purse with an interior laptop pocket. It features excellent style, organization, and comes in a variety of colors and sizes, perfect for customizing it to your exact needs and taste.
The main drawback reviewers noted is that the actual laptop pocket is very snug, suitable primarily for 13-inch laptops and not larger 15- and 17-inch laptops. Those may fit in the bag, but it would likely have to just go into the main pocket, rattling around with whatever else you throw in the bag. Otherwise, this is an excellent commuter-friendly bag that offers excellent style at a great value.
When I read messages from my Messenger on my laptop, the Messenger app on my phone still has the message as unread even though I already replied on the messages. This always happen since I bought the phone. Also, my laptop is not an Apple, it's Windows so I can't say that the problem is in the version of both device. And I don't know if the problem is within the Messenger app or on the iPhone, I just assumed that it's on the iPhone because when I ask my friend who has an Android phone, he said that it's automatically read on his phone even thought he used Messenger on his Laptop. It is also annoying though to be messaging on my computer and then look at my phone and see a bunch of unread messages. Then I have to open it all once again. Please fix this. Thank you.
I ordered this on Black Friday, getting a good price. I was skeptical on just how good it would look, function, & hold up with heavy use. I have two other leather bags that I love, but I wanted to mix it up a bit. It feels good quality, and it doesn't fold and crinkle like cheap 'paper leather' that I have seen with other leather messenger bags on Amazon.
being a lecturer at a local university, i wanted to find a bag that would hold a small laptop, notes and looked like indiana jones' bag and this was perfect. it also works for when i play an orchestra performance as it also holds my music, small repair kit for my horn and oil.
Eventually I grew tired of the heavy shoulder bag and the back problems that came with regularly carrying it. I reverted back to my old trusty LowePro CompuDayPack as it is far more comfortable to carry the weight on my back. After selling my Pentax system I can still fit my laptop, charger, D3x and three primes in the CompuDayPack.

Perfect for on-the-go professionals and the busy college students, Targus messenger laptop bags seamlessly integrate convenience, style and protection. Throw your laptop and gear in your bag, close the flap and get moving.
Principal concern is that there is no hard casing around the laptop compartment, and I am a little worried that the charger in the outer pocket is applying a little bit of force down on the laptop. Second issue is that the pouches are too thin for a normal-sized external mouse, although with how well the touchpad is working so far I might not actually need it. Overall decent enough to use for now but will keep my eye out for something with a hard case.
