Hello, I have a question about matching a hand-collected database(from others) with COMPUSTAT using CIK cause the database that I have does not have CUSIP or GVKEY.

I've heard that CIK of COMPUSTAT is not historical, I may lose some samples that changed CIK.

Unfortunately, my school does not subscribe WRDS SEC Analytics Suite, I don't know how to solve this issue.

One suggests that I may manually collect CUSIP/GVKEY based on the company name, but I am running out of time.

I would really appreciate it if you let me know the solution!!

Big Thanks!

hi Christine,

How large is the sample? (Is it feasible to do something by hand?)

When you match Compustat with CIK, about 30% of the observations are lost (also because of missing CIKs in Funda). The gvkey-cik linktable that is part of the WRDS SEC Analytics Suite resolves just a modest portion of these. So basically everybody loses a fair chunk of observations when using SEC filings.

Hope this helps,

Joost
