I may have exceeded the speed limit on the way to the club today. I was running late. When I got to the club, I was surprised to see no cats on the lawn. I had to reassure myself that today was indeed Sunday and Frostbite is a thing. As my car was spraying gravel sliding sideways into a parking spot, I noticed a bunch o cat sailors standing around talking. They were trying to convince themselves that it would be ok not to sail today because the wind was light. You could almost hear tiny violins playing as the tears flowed. I didn’t have time for that nonsense.
I pulled Chris Allen aside and said, “Thanks for loaning me and Eric a Nacra mainsail. We are done with it. Can I return it to you now?”
He said, “Did you damage it?”
I said, “No.”
He said, “How do I know?”
I said, "Because I said so” I thought to myself, “what a jackass.”
I gave him the mainsail. Chris Allen and Kris Bergerson unrolled the sail inside the clubhouse. Then Chris Allen inspected every square inch of the sail with a huge Sherlock Holmes sized magnifying glass. Until that moment, I thought I had seen everything. But, when I saw the magnifying glass…I don’t know…It’s like starting a whole new chapter.
I walked away. Silently leading by example, I put my boat on the lawn, rigged and launched. Some guys rigged and launched with me. Others went home.
We had a nice day sailing. Warm partly cloudy day. Flat water. Good wind most of the time. Got a little light at times. Good close racing. The lead exchanged hands many times.
