Subject: WRAM: Passing of John Canning's Father
Dear Mark,I have some sad news. My dad passed on Sunday, October 6, 2024. He was suffering with AML and it was his choice to enter hospice care. There is no service scheduled at this time. I'm hanging in there, but grieving is tough. I'll be in Virginia for the week with mom and my sisters taking care of affairs, etc., and will miss October’s meeting and Flight Fest. My dad was an avid supporter of my interest in the hobby. He helped build my first plane, a Carl Goldberg Eaglet 50, but we didn't have a place to fly it. I recall as kid going with dad to Andy's Hobby Shop and inquiring about places to fly. We went for a few flights at the now IBM property in Somers and then somehow, I don't recall the details, got introduced to WRAMs. Eventually, with the support of dad and my three sponsors, Vinny Perillo, George Plumer, and Danny Carozza, I became a youth WRAM member. Dad would drive me to the field as often as we could, and we continued to build planes together. I still have a yet-to-be-flown 1/4 scale J3 Cub that he built that I want to get airborne Summer 2025 in his memory. He worked WRAM shows in the mid-eighties at the County Center and most recently was at the 2014 show at the Expo Center. In the past couple of years, I sent him links to YouTube videos of the field and he said the “field looked great!” Any memorial recognition is suggested to be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Yorktown Heights, NY, where my parents and family were active volunteers. Dad's obituary can be searched here: welchfuneralhomeva.com. Hope all is well with you and our extended WRAM family and that we can catch up soon.Peace,John Canning
