Heh heh, Warren's departure even made news out here in Calgary. I heard it
this morning. Apparently he's moving to Victoria to write a book and produce a
movie?
I didn't know "Suzi" was leaving. Where's she off to???

Peter Warren leaving? I haven't anything about that. Perhaps he's only
going away on holidays.
I think Warren will be become more and more unbearable as the next
provincial election nears. On any given day his strong Conservative bias
is ridiculous, but I think he'll be freely stooping to silly rhetoric as
Filmon (or his replacement) gets ready to call the election. About the
only other person I think of that's more of jackass than Warren has to
be Vic Grant.
As for Mayor Thompson...don't let the door hit you in the arse on your
way out. The crowning achievement of her reign as Queen Suzie is the
systematic dismantling of democracy at City Hall.
I think it's absurd that her Executive Committee also makes up the
majority of council. The loss of democracy was carefully hidden in the
"great glory" of reducing the size of council.
Other than that, the other achievement of can think of was the erection
of signs outside the city saying how great Winnipeg is.

True, but "One Great City" beats "City of Champignons" anytime
(Edmonton's motto with slight modification).
I just got the WFP, and on page A2 there ir is, Warren is gone come the
end of the year. GOOD!
While Warren did delve into doing some good causes for the most part he
was merely an unaccountable sounding board for the Conservatives. He
dispised anyone that had a higher education than him. He hated anyone
that dared to disagree with him.
Over the last few years I have rarely listened to the sod, so I won't
miss him.
One question though about 1290. I understand that Gerald Fast has been
moved to afternoons and that the Dr. Laura sex show is on in the
mornings. If 1290 is supposed to be doing such as good job in taking
away ratings from OB, then why has it's #1 voice been moved?
So just will replace Warren? OB's on-air bully Vic Grant? 1290's
pseudo-fascist talk show host John Collison?
Glen
There was talk Prime Minister Chretien was going to appoint her Consul
General in Minneapolis, but that has since been apparently kaboshed. I'm
sure her feverent support for the Liberals during the Flood of the
Century will earn her a patronage appointment. I think there might be a
Senate seat opening soon for Manitoba.
Yvon Dumont's extended term as Leftenant Governor is up this spring.
Perhaps she'll get that, but I suspect it will be going to former MP Jon
Gerrard. He was supposed to be running for the Manitoba Liberal
Leadership but the establishment has instead recruited Chief Gerry
Fontaine (nephew to Phil Fontaine).

*I* should be appointed LG. I know a great deal about the office,
constitutional law, and I have the will to use the little power the office
actually has to enable HM to fulfill her oath to the people of Manitoba.
*I* would have refused to give Royal Assent to the MTS bill. It simply
wasn't passed according to the rules of the Legislature, so the people of
Manitoba did not assent to it. How can the Crown, in good conscience,
assent to a bill it cannot confirm was assented to by the People?
And that's the reason another Filmon drinking buddy will be appointed and
not me.

Are they moving her Lardship via semi with a big D on the front?
There's a tradition in Manitoba that I need to make you aware of, that
being the person that wants the jobs usually doesn't get it. The most
recent example being former Manitoba PC leader Sid Spivak. He was the
favourite to get the job, but Mulroney appointed Dumont instead.
I doubt that a good Filmon team member will get the appointment. It will
go to a Liberal as the feds, specifically the PM, makes the appointment.
There's no doubt the MTS bill was passed under most dubious
circumstances.
While Filmon argued that the Legislautre was operating under a new set
of rules and so no other rulings applied, he was lying. When Speaker
Dacquay made her ruling, and I have read it, it heavily relied on the
rulings of the speaker of the H of C during the pipeline debate of the
mid 1950's.
I think that if Denis Rocan had been speaker that shit pulled by Filmon
and company would have been stopped dead in its tracks. That's why
Filmon made Dacquay speaker.
But tories being tories, I'm disappointed that a very well respected
like Rocan did not speak out.

And just for your info -- 'OB has about 19 per cent of Winnipeg's

Methinks that's not much of a threat.

I can remember standing in 6 inches of mud with ice underneath trying to
stack sandbags to form a dike at the neighbours. That freakin' bastard
of an SOB Chretien had the nerve to call the federal election.
Now I'm not anti-Quebec or anti-Ontario, but there was no doubt in my

Wally, let's get one thing straight here and now. What I chose to post
here has nothing to do with the NDP. When I write a post it consists of
what are my opinions, not those of NDP.
While you raise the subject of Liberal policy, let's take a look at Lord
Axworthy's accomplishments at international duplicity.
While Axworthy is basking in the glow shining from the glory of the
treaty on personnel landmines, he is actively strenghtening relations
with some the worlds most disgusting characters. For instance, the
GENOCIDAL MANIAC running Indonesia.
I can still remember Lord Axworthy in his opposition days making a huge
case out of how the Mulroney regime cut UIC payments from 65% of what a
person made to 55%. Now what happened when this supposedly left-wing
Liberal was Human Resources Minister. Lord Axworthy in his hypocrisy cut
payments to 50% and made it extremely difficult for workers to collect.
Come to think of it, I can still remember the Liberals rallying to cause
of defeating the Can-US FTA. The fight of their lives. Now in typical
Liberal duplicity they have further entrenched this country into more
unfair trade deals.
Reading the Red Book from the 93 campaign it reminded me of many NDP
policies and a few Tory ones for that fine Liberal balance of duplicity.
I agreed with the Red Book that the best way to solve the deficit
problem was through job creation and not massive spending cuts to social
programs. Yet "in the progress of a people" Paul Martin (the one that
makes sure his company doesn't pay its taxes owed to the Canadian
government) perhaps achieved the greatest Liberal flip-flop since
Mackenzie-King was spinning the line "conscription if necessary, but not
necessarily conscription".

Duplicity, or a reasonable balance ? Personally, I find that the NDP and
Tories both have some good ideas... What is wrong with looking for a
balance between the two ? (In fact, that's what gets me...how can one
totally write off the policies of any of the Liberals, Tories or NDP ?)
I think that if you're seeking the best interests of a party, then you
vehemently stick to a party line, but if you're looking out for the best
interests in the country, you change your approach to governing as
circumstances dictate.

I think Paul Martin has done a respectable job finding fiscal balance
without gutting social programs. Certainly, I do not think Mr. Martin
has done a perfect job, but I think if the next few budgets focus on
channeling the dividends to social spending, Canada could really be the
better for it.

As the story goes the Liberals are always the last party to hold a
policy convention. That way they can pick and choose the policies they
want to steal from the other parties. I guess it saves time on original
thought.

Being pragmatic is essential to running a government, as is sticking to
a basic ideology. Many would me an ideologue and to a extent I guess
that I am. Which doesn't bother me, because maintaining an ideology
allows for more honesty. Looking that the history of the Liberals Party
that is seriously lacking.
I will give the party credit for evolving from a strongly anti-semetic
organization (ie: the Hitler loving bigot William Lyon Mackenzie King)
to one that at least appears to be tolerant of others.

Wally, please, I have enough respect for you to realize a BS line when I

Over $70 BILLION in unpaid corporate taxes just under the current
Liberal government. Yet social programs face taken the brunt of Martin's
spending cuts. Where is my friend the balance?
If I recall correctly corporate taxation today accounts for less than
10% of the goverment's revenues. In the early 1970's it accounted for
slightly more than 20%.
In all honesty how can a government cut its own revenues and boost
spending? The "horrible" debt we as a country have today is NOT from
excessive social spending but from excessive tax cuts handed to the
corporate sector.
Across the board tax cuts will not rectify this situation. What is
needed is the political will to make the tax system fair. I for one am
sick and tired of subsidizing the corporate sector.

My aunt and uncle owned the Tourist Hotel that once stood on Main St. in

When my uncle tried to buy a car in Steinbach the prices jumped by a

When they tried to build their new hotel within city limits they lost in
a referendum. So they built it just a few yards outside of city limits.

when somebody is appointed by their brother they should expect big

Didn't R.D. blow him self away a few years ago? I seem to recall one MLA named
Doern who punched his own clock back in the 80's.
You mention Cobain too later on in that same post... interesting.

Sterling Lyon, Red was a nick name.
Premier 1980 - 1984.
You're right about Doern. If I recall correctly it was at an Emerson
area farm. I think it was shortly after he lost to Bill Norrie in a
mayoral election. That would have been during the mid 1980's.
Having read both of Doern's books (the other being "The Battle Over
Bilingualism) I got the sense that he had changed a great deal over the
years.
I'll give him credit for part of his analyis in his second book. That
being there far too many hangers-on from Ontario in key positions in the
Pawley government. They did not take in account the differences in the
political cultures between Manitoba and Ontario.
That debate drew out at lot of closet bigots into the mainstream. Many
of them Tories.

I always though Lyon's nickname was Rufus or is that his middle name.
BTW, Lyon was premier from 1977 to 1981 and Tory leader from 1975 to
1983. He took the leadership away from Sid Spivak by running a vicious
anti-semetic whisper campaign.

Lord Axworthy's Winnipeg South Centre seat, he was eventually given his

Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party after Gildas Molgat and before Izzy
Asper. In an extremely feeble attempt to generate interest in the
sagging Liberals, Bend toured the province in the 1969 election in a bus
named the "Bend Wagon". I do believe that tour also included a pit of a
country/western theme.

Saw Sterling this afternoon stocking up on veggies at Vic's

Pembina.
He looked very healthy..... never realized how short he was....
quite vertically challenged.
He was short listed for a senate seat once or twice as I recall
but it never came off. No idea what he is doing now besides

Thanks for clearing that one up.
Whaaa ? Why is this ?
I certainly won't miss her. She had as much credibility as a typical
caller to CJOB's "Action Line".
I am surprised to hear this. I read Russ Doern's book "Wednesdays are
Cabinet Days" after Christmas. I thought it was going to be painfully
dull, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When I tried to find
out more about Doern by searching through the Electronic Hansard, I was
surprised to learn he had died, seeing how young he was. It's only now
that I find out that he called his own number.
I'd be interested to know the course Doern's life took after he wrote
the first book... The author of Steve Juba's bio (Mike Czuboka ?)
mentioned that he had lost a lot of credibility with the "vitriolic"
attacks of his second book (which I never read, but only skimmed
through.) I find that fairly intriguing...what could have prompted him
to commit suicide ? Was the loss of the mayoral election the cause ? Or
was it just the straw that broke the camel's back ?

Free Trade, GST, the drug bill, WGTA...need I mention mention more
broken promises since _1993_?
Now let's take the latest vile spin doctoring, that being the Liberal
view of the Hep C victims.
In order to impose his will, Chretien began spinning the idea that the
Reform motion was a motion of non-confidence. Now I'm not an expert in
parliamentary procedure but the motion was not one of a non-confidence.
And just what did we witness yesterday? Liberal after Liberal
backbencher stand up to vote against the Reform motion acting greatly
displeased about Chretien's orders on how to vote.
So Wally, what happened? Liberal MP's putting their electoral careers
BEFORE the decency due to the Hep C victims not covered by the
compensation package.
Furthermore the aged political warhorse, Herb Gray, has the nerve to
trot out time after time that provincial Tory and NDP governments agreed
to this compensation package. Here is a fine example of a Liberal
powerbroker putting forth the concept that party loyal is paramount over
doing the right thing.
The Clark and Romanow governments along with all the other provincial
are in the wrong by screwing the Hep C victims not covered by the
compensation package.

I seriously doubt that if Trudeau had lost the 1980 election that there
would be a Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
But the Libs still like to show their intolerance from time to time.
Take the Hep C victims for example.

I take partial credit for screwing up CKJS' programming regarding Bob
Larson. After listening to one his programs my cousin and I decided to
file a complaint with the CRTC. Whenever Larson's live program got a
little to much like hate they were required to run something else.
I even got on air with Larson and drove him up the wall. If you think I
can be nasty here then you should hear the tape of me and Larson.
I understand now CKJS doesn't carry his show anymore. I guess donations
from Manitoba dried up.
What is interesting is in Larson's divorce he finally had to ante up as
to what his real salary was. He had always claimed he never took more
than $70,000, which was less than one-tenth of his real salary. His home
in Denver was valued at more than $3 million.
Amazing how much a guy can make by twisting the Bible and demanding
money.

In this day and age a politicians couldn't get away with things like Ed
Schreyer and Joe Borowski did. Schreyer with his groups of cheerleaders
called "Schreyer Dolls". Borowski having one of his secretaries draw his
napkin across his lap when serving him coffee and a muffin.
I Doern was right in that Borowski was a mistake to recruit as a
candidate. He proved to be far more of a right-winger in his desires t
impose his views on society. I'm surprised that Schreyer tolerated him
for so long.

I think to the Elmwood NDP association had enough of Doern when it came
to the nomination meeting for the 1986 election. They chose Jim Maloway
as their candidate.
> I find that fairly intriguing...what could have prompted him

I think it was the latter. I have no idea what Doern's personal life was
like. Indeed a great tradgey.
My impression is party members largely do not consider Doern to be of
the same mould as traitors like Elijah Harper or Jim Walding.
Glen
LOL... That guy's nuts. I do think that the protesters at his rally here
went a little too far (it would've been interesting to hear his
ranting). I occasionally listened to his show, just for the
entertainment value. I felt badly for the people who believed he was
genuine, though. One can't overestimate the importance of donations and
tithes to religions and ministries, but his methods of soliciting
donations verged on extortion.
So what did you say to him on the air ?? :)

Not really... I find them to be a nuisance and a potential risk (ie.
hitting one), so I've begun using the Midtown Bridge to get to work
after school instead of the Osborne Bridge.
I have never given a Squeegee kid a cent, and I don't plan on doing

morning and Osborne and Stradbrook every night.
I get one of them to do it maybe once a week when the windshield is
dirty. I simply wave them off politely, they say thanks, and that's that.
I have to say Don, I don't know if you just got a couple of dumb kids or
you just look mean, but I've been dealing with them pretty much ever since
i got to Winnipeg and *never* EVER had a problem -- I've never even seen a
problem.

It would be easier for me to get home, but I think a lot of people avoid
travelling through the village for just that reason. The additional
traffic might not be welcome.

Could be, and I don't dispute Don's testimony, but it would be a mistake

Interesting. We don't here any Moose stories out here in wild
red neck country.
I talked to a few kids last year and they were truckin' arcross Canada and
said that Winnipeg had a good skate scene...and was okay with squeegie
kids.
The good squeegies should self-organize and establish some uniqe style.
What ends up happening is transient kids from Halifax or vancouver do the
squeegie for a few days, swear at a motorist and hit the next town.
The resident squeegie kids are left with everyone hating them.
Some ideas.
1. wear an "Im a winnipeg squeegie kid- name badge"
2. have a squeegie traffic lane, or set up in a ex-Gas Station
3. have them pass out free restaurant coupons to those who get wiped
4. have motorists put a bright "stickon" in window says "no squeegie"
5. have a "no chains around neck" rule for those wanting to wipe cars
6. offer more service to those who want to pull over, clean inside car
7. give these guys your number to cut your grass as an extra job
Anyhow, I first saw this squeegie idea in Paris about 10 years
ago....where the only black people in town were either squeeging the
windows or seling trinkets on the street.
Most kids think its fun, just like when they operate a rickshaw. But
eventually, it becomes a menial job where the owner collects the money and
those who can't get other work drag tourists on the rickshaw.

in Winnipeg square but no longer work down there)

frankly, the one anti-rasist was a total jerk...and could have caused a

megaphone into these people ears, and everyone around them.
I think if more people would have yelled, then had a rational conversation

He could have controlled the crowd better...but he let the opposition

It's the Osborne Biz that is pushing to have these kids removed. To me

Sorry man, but I can't image a sqeegee kid wearing a geeky name tag. It
would definately clash with their attire.
> 2. have a squeegie traffic lane, or set up in a ex-Gas Station
A squeegee traffic lane would certainly help of the cause of Village
being pushed back from the street with dynamite, he-he.
An old gas station would defeat the purpose. Few drivers would pull off
the road to have the windows on their vechiles cleaned.

I think most of the squeegee kids do it just to get by. There might some
kids doing it for fun and that don't need the money.

Yes there is and the protestors excerised their right to free speech. I
have no problem in a money grubbing con-artist and hatemongerer like Bob
Larson having treated like that. He had a $3 million mansion to go home
to in Denver.

If the skinhead was a racist then I serious doubt that a rational

Larson was not getting the donations out of Manitoba as he used to.
Thanks to the CRTC and a little bit of citizen's initaitive the great

First of all Bob Larson is _not_ a rational man. He was and still is a

Workplace accidents have been on the increase for several years. Major
causes are fewer inspectors and relaxing many of the workplace safety
regulations.
Now if cops got hurt and killed as often as workers then something would
be done about it.

There's time to do some research as most of the fields have yet to be
seeded.
But then your luck might turn against you. Not that you'll get caught,
but rather a wind storm will knock down most of the crop thus hiding the
crop circles.

I know of one person that donated to Larson. That's besides myself. I

Extortion is an excellent word to describe his tactics.

The truth. I'll dig up the tape (I sent away to his ministires for it)
one of these days.
I got him riled up near the first of half his show. He began the second
half with a lengthy tirade against me. The latter part was delayed in
Winnipeg until 11pm. Gudmundson, my cousin Tom and I were cruising the
streets in his Mustang. When the second part began, Darren had to pull
over because he was laughing so hard.

Norm, I don't look mean, I'm cute!! ( just ask my wife ) ;)
I guess that dealing with these kids on a regular basis you _could_

had the Van detailed and it was not dirty. The kids would not take no
for an answer.....I dunno why. As this was my first and last experience
with them, I ( using hindsight now ) may have dealt with the problem
better. I could have caved and just flipped them a loonie as toll for
travelling that street.
Seriously though, when I am sworn at, by 4 kids, I get annoyed. I do not
think for 1 minuite these kids are poor. When I opened my door, a reflex
action, puff they was 4 instead of 2. The _discussion lasted through the
green light and people were honking so we all gave up.
That is no excuse for spitting on my van, darn good thing I didn't see

I recall when the "Squegee Kids" first began to appear at Stradbrook & Osborne
and also at Broadway & Osborne. The few kids who were squeegee-ing were
remarkably polite, very efficient and they knew how to get out of traffic's way
once a light turned green. You very rarely were delayed because of some kid
trying to get their squeegee fee after the light changed.
Now, however, you have about 5 times the squeegee "staff" working an
intersection. Some of these kids squeegee for money to live on, while others
apparently find it "kewl" to hang out and squeegee the odd car. The people who
squeegee for a living generally are not a problem, its the posers who are there
for
other reasons that seem to lack the skills to get out of the way of traffic. I
almost ran over one girl a couple of weeks ago. The light was green, all the
traffic was proceeding through Osborne, and this one kid, tempting the hand of
Darwin, tried to cross Stradbrook through moving traffic. This kid was obviously
a "River Heights" street kid... all the new boots and leather, GAP jeans, etc.
Not the wardrobe your typical street kid runs around in.
Its always the amateurs who ruin it for the pros..
Rog
BTW, this issue has recieved a fair bit of TV coverage recently. Did anybody see
the squeegee kid in city hall lobbying with Nick Ternette and "The Association
of Unemployed Canadians (??)".... the squeegee guy was on camera wearing a
bright orange vest with reflective tape on it, leaving the impression that he's
a very safe squeegee guy who's concerned with visibility in traffic. Has anybody
every seen a squeegee guy wearing a safety vest? Didn't think so. T'was a nice
touch for the news-bite though. Good coaching!

While certainly not the norm, yes. There are three different guys at
Osborne and River and Osborne and Stradbrook that wear them.
But then, if you're paying attention to traffic ahead of you, do you
really *need* to have the guy wear a flashing light on his head? If people
paid half as much attention to what's going on on the road ahead of them
rather than crack jokes at the "weird lookin' kids" or worrying that one
of them might hijack you to Cuba, there'd be little to concern yourself
with.

I'm travelling through these interesections daily to and from my offices. I have not
seen a squeegee person wearing a safety vest yet. Maybe these three work at times
that I'm not in the area. You've likely seen the three smartest squeegee-ers.

Unfortunately, your assumption is incorrect. Who's investigating a need
for a flashing light on someone's head (other than you)? I was raising the issue
of safety vests and I was curious if are they actually worn by people who are doing
squeegee work in traffic. If some of them are wearing this kind of safety gear, I
commend them for it. It displays the same common sense as joggers who wear
reflective tape at night, cyclists who have reflective clothes, and last but not
least, construction workers and crossing guards who also work in areas of traffic
and wear vests too.
The people who drive in my car-pool to work are by and large attentive drivers with
maximum merit points. They drive prudently. It is precisely their driving and
attentiveness that has on occassion saved the skin (and likely a few months in
traction) of a couple of squeegee kids when the sloppy ones have forgotten that
they're trying to work in traffic.
Again, the ones who know their business do not obstruct traffic. It's the sloppy
ones who give their small "industry" a bad name.
If all the close calls between squeegee kids and traffic are caused by bad, gawking
drivers that would be one thing, but I think if you did some more thinking about it,
you'd likely conlcude that this is not the case. There is a responsibility that
those who work on roads must follow also.

Quite right. I raised a further issue of the *necessity* (and not the
prudence; I think that's beyond question) for such gear.

>you'd likely conlcude that this is not the case.
Well, that really wasn't my point. It's the bad driver who *aren't*
gawking, but playing with themselves that are the problem. Winnipeg
drivers, by and large, simply do not pay adequate attention to what is
going on around them, the road conditions, or even the structure of the
road on which they travel.
A digression to illustrate:
At Portage and St. Mary, the northbound lanes of St. Mary can make left or
right turn onto Portage or continue straight onto Spence. However, the
majority of traffic, two lanes worth, make the left turn onto westbound
Portage. Westbound Portage, is three lanes, plus a parking lane, wide.
The northbound St. Mary drivers must turn into the two *inner*lanes of
westbound Portage. However, the rightmost northbound St. Mary drivers
making the left hand turn routinely turn into the third innermost lane
(i.e., the lane next to the parking lane). I can see this intersection
from my office window. At the last light change, *all* twelve cars that
should have turned into the second innermost lane failed to do so. A bus
was cut off. A cyclist was forced out of her lane, and two other cars
nearly collided. With only the slightest bit of knowledge of the rules and
paying only enough attention to see where the lanes are would avoid these
sorts of things -- and I'm sure everyone here can attest to other 'pet
peeve' intersections.
If you are stopped at a light where these kids are, you can see that there
are kids. Look for them and avoid them. Your buddies were wathcing for
the moron kids with their heads stuck up their ass and did their jobs. If
even most driveers did so at these lights, there'd be that much less to
bitch about.
>There is a responsibility that those who work on roads must follow also.
Certainly. No quibbles here.

I think I saw one squeegie guy with an orange vest.
I wear one when i ride my hog...(actually its a moped, but when it speeds
up to 20km it thinks its a hog:)
Squeegie kids:
I often also wonder how many with the special hair(no hair) treatments are
on the side of good or no-good. (many look like your typical neonazi
skinheads out of any major city)
Ice Cream bikes
Did you ever notice how many rough looking guys were operating those ice
cream bikes a few years ago? I heard that some were selling a little more
than just ice cream. The special was the "snow cone" and it wasn't
icecream. Could you ask for a better way to be on the street on a
regular basis to serve your regular customers....hmmm
Reichman family tv show tonite?
I think theres a show on tv about the billionaire liquor sellers the
Reichmans. Winnipeg has a role to play in the past as one of the biggest
liquor smuggling, bootleg operations in Canada.
(hopefully I am not wrong and should be referring to Bronfmans:)
You sometimes have to really wonder how people can get that rich selling
your average widgets.
The secrets that are buried in Winnipegs business past are probably so
murky that it would crumble the foundation of the grain trade.
Its much easier to prosecute a squeegie kid than the owner of a garment
factory who ripped off hundreds of staff and government funding bodies for
milions when they changed ownership. (was a common occurence inthe 1970s
80s in Winnipeg)

the plan to put a highclass restaurant in Pavillion at Assin Park
(I guess that will kill the ice cream stand inside...and probably have a

2. The Movable Bridge Restaurant idea
Someone wanted to put a restaurant in that big bridge in Winnipeg...no
word about it lately. Unless WOW restaurant jumps in, since they are the
new movers and shakers...are about to get approval to restaurant in that
house on Wellington crescent.
3. Anybody try that new cafe on Asiiniboine?
Some kind of an artists hangout opened...I havent seen it yet.
4. Isn't there a no peeing policy on the street?
About an hour before that fire on Isabel...I saw a guy using the side of
the building next door for a toilet - #1. Lots of traffic....I havent
seen that since main street.
I felt like giving him a free ticket for the movie "Full Monty"...maybe he
could make a fe bucks in his new act and not have to rely on panhandling.
hmmm....yeah, if only someone could organize the panhandlers and squeegie
kids to become exotic dancers, then the women would make these guys rich
enough to buy Osborne village..and they could keep all the hoyty toyty
complainers out :)
or...at least get some entrepreneur to make a "squeegie boys calendar" or
why not a rap group..."The Squeegie 5"

It's likely that they make far more as "squeegee kids" than they would
for minimum wage at a gas station, where they also have to pay taxes
on their official income, and do exactly what the boss says.
I take offense that people wouldn't hire somebody just because they
look like a "road warrior". If you can't get past what somebody looks
like, you play a part in contributing to the lack of "real" jobs for
them. What the hell does it matter what they look like - will it
somehow affect their job performance? The only thing it will affect
is people who don't want to shop there because of what the employees
look like - which is the same problem.
That being said, I dislike being harassed walking on the street or in
a vehicle stopped at a light by people that want money. Do it without
harassment, and stay off the road!

Bull. Having a free society doesn't mean throwing common sense out the
window, and not recognizing human nature. That's why we have traffic laws
(and other laws).
Also, there was a news show on TV about a year back... In some American
cities, there are people selling things at stop lights. They have the same,
but greater, safety, traffic delay and toll/extortion problems. Plus fraud
and stolen property issues. IMHO this problem will spread here too, just
like squeegee kids, telemarketing, cat juggling and the Reform Party.

No. Sometimes common sense kicks in BEFORE someone gets killed.

You bring up a very good point Perry. I've driven down in Florida and
California in the past couple of years. And YES.. it is common to see
people sitting at busy traffic lights, tapping on windows and trying to
peddle trinkets. It's only a matter of time before we see that here.
I especially recall a large unsavory fellow in south Miami with an armful of
giant balloons. When the cars stopped for a light, he waded into traffic and
began pounding on car windows with his fist to get the driver's attention.
When you get enough people on a busy roadway on other than a crosswalk, it
is inevitable there will be accidents either through the inattention of a
driver, a vendor/squeege person or both.
The middle of a roadway just isn't the place for pedestrians and as such, I
think this is justification enough to stop the practice.
I am no great fan of the squeegies but do like the iniative by the
non-abusive ones.
They should give out scratch-wins to everybody. (get Pollard Banknotes to
make up a few thousand as a gimmick)
Do it like Tim Hortons, roll up the window to win.
Everybody would love to be stopped by a squeegie if there were prizes
- dinner in fancy restaurant
- remax balloon ride, etc etc
And you get double awards if you had asked for a window cleaning also.
Also give awards to "best" squeegie kid.
They really need a PR agency more than anything else right now.

OR... for those with more violent tendencies...
We could stage the biggest Human "Frogger" game in history.
(or some version of the Bullfight)
Ten points if you just ding' a squeegie...20 if he rolls over the front of
car, and 30 if
you pay $100 to enter the lane.
Squeegies wear protective helmets, padding and get some training in
surviving light impacts from MPIC.
The object for the squeegie is to make it across the street safely while
wiping the windows of at least 3 cars before getting broadsided.
Winter beaters could be used for the competition..or else just Tilden
rent a cars :)
If the squeegie wins, he-she gets $1,000.

I used to get the DOMO guy to clean my windshields on my Honda after

Must go and get out my snow shovel...just in case it gets any colder

It isn't a violation of any law to do what they are doing.

There is nothing here that makes what they do conceptually incoherent.
Sidewalks are for pedestrian traffic, but there are booths hawking goods
on the sidewalks. The streets are for vehicles, but parked vans sell food
while on them. You haven't said anything compelling yet.

I still doubt that concern for the safety of the kids is foremost in the
minds of most people who make arguments like this.

The question is exactly *which* laws... ban them or regulate them?

My apologies. :)

Right. Driving a car around is dangerous, so we have laws regarding them,
but we don't outlaw them; we regulate them.

The American cities that have these problems have 5 times the population
and much deeper social problems than we do - I think this is a slippery
slope fallacy.

Cat jugglers are under attack again - typical. :)
But let's keep things in perspective - just because a bunch of guys are
pissed off doesn't mean there is a problem.

Common sense would in this case dictate that we regulate rather than ban.

Well if Stu is right, and a vote was held, and the "kids" have to move
out of downtown......this to me would signal that _there_ was indeed a
problem percieved by the general public.
A possible solution may be that the kids station themselves at bus stops
that are indented ( can't think of the right word, but they are out of
mainstream trafic for the stop ) and wait for cars to pull in and ask
for a wash. This would seem to be safe, without banning them completely.
It has the added benifit of no cash outlay on the part of the "kids" for
renting a spot parking lot etc.
