I often think about utensils. Why they are shaped the way they are, and
what drives the design evolution.

Take the fork. I'm sure the original fork was a pointy stick. But now,
due to modern technology in fork design, I can bring peas to my mouth in
a variety of ways. Try eating peas quickly with a stick. Can't be done.

And why don't all knives have sharp edges? The standard issue cutlery
knife is useless. Great for cutting jello though. I want a diamond
edged serrated saber of cooked-meat dissection. Besides, a cleaner cut
means less pain when you are in ER getting your hand stitched up.

Coming to spoons. Spoons are great, except for the plastic ones from
Wendy's. Way too deep, and poorly made. The corners of my mouth hurt
afterwards from the rough edges.

So fork, knife, spoon. Is there room for a fourth device? Will some
visionary convince the Civilized World they need to make more room for
the place-setting? We've got liquid, solids and cutting taken care
of. What else could there be?

And quiz time. You can only use one of those 3 for the rest of your
life, which would it be?

I vote fork.

I vote knife... with a knife you can carve a spoon and a fork.

If it's a nice knife you can wander the neighbourhood and comandeer all the
spoons and forks you want :-)

What about a spork with a serrated edge on one side of the curve and a
very sharp edge on the other?

That sounds like the best plan -- I think you just won the quiz!

I already thought about this. Won't work. People don't like to put
sharp objects in their mouths. A knfoorn (I'll get mine when IKEA
opens) would mean a razor-sharp blade running against your lips when you
eat soup.

If you 'eat' soup. How thick does soup have to become before it is
stew? The eternal debate.

A fork/spoon combo is best, but on one long utensil. One end fork,
other spoon. Not often we find the need for both at the same time (like
a knife & fork).

That naked cyborg chick from T3.. she was all silver liquid, right? I
would like her to be my utensil set. She could morph around to what I
need. There muse be some freaky Japanese fetish that involves eating
with cadaver hands.. and if not, I want credit when it becomes an an
accepted & mainstream family activity.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
