I noticed that Grapes Pier 7 on Pembina Highway closed down, and I was
wondering if anyone knew why?

It was around for many years and seemed to be a thriving business.

I was just wondering why another business went under...

re: Grapes closing locations over the years

Grapes closed down shortly after a few of us were there for wings....
coincidence or happenstance :)

Although I loved the wings that night, one of my freinds was upset to see
the staff playing vlts and opening the machine to keep on playing.

He also thought the place was all tattered and gone to hell and told the
owners. It closed down within a month or so I believe....not that I am
giving my friend any credit for this.

I always wondered why the beautiful Grapes on St Marys closed. That was
a classy grapes, much nicer than even the Main location.

Many years back i thought the whole chain was going to fold, because some
of the investors were Winnipeg Jets and there was some kind of a kerfuffle
over money.

(restaurants have historically been tax shelters for Winnipeg lawyers, and
became great places to sock money by pro hockey players in the Jets heydays)

We have some pretty sharp restauranteurs in this town who have longevity
but there are a sprinkling of restaurants set up out of love of the idea
of owning the restaurant and not so much filling a market need.

- Dalys burgers on Corydon, great food, real clean, but almost always mt
- I wonder when the last few AWs will close completely
- both Salsbury house and Kelekis opened in 1931 apparently, wow!
- tell someone at Mother Tuckers to spend $100 and fix the washrooms

I used to love having beer and free pizza at the Times bar on Portage
about 6 years ago. (used to be Daytons with 2 floors). They had great
the best...all you can eat chicken wings and pizza ive every had, and free!

But eventually, it was closed down a week after one of my other friends said
he say two roaches on the pizza. I never believed my friend and said i was
prepared to live with a few roaches to have the best wings and za ever.

hooters- Im sorry but I almost puked when i at those buttery smelly wings.
Unless its someking of a traditional taste that Im just not accustomed to,
Ive never had such a greasy buttery wing in my life. I was only in once,
and find the whole concept bad. Why force women to smile and act like they
want to be oggled by guys when probaly most of the guys turn them off. At
least at a strip bar you know what your getting and at a regular bar you
know what your getting..but in there, I thought a few guys were on verge
of getting a harassment suit slapped on them if they went any further.

Pizza Hut still has the all you can eat lunch downtown i believe. Their
pizza is okay for the all you can eat value. :) Gondola in Charleswood
still has their all u can eat monday thin crust nite.

I still want to try out Little Caesars which also apparently has an
all u can eat nite some nite. (new location on Mcphillips I think)

New "Fatboy" restaurant on Mcphillips in location of old Subway spot.

the Old AW on Notre dame, has the multirestaurants in it. Very clean place
and a nice choice of donuts, subs, za, ice cream. Maybe the idea will work.

Pembina coffee shop beside Ramada. They finally closed the poor Italian guy
down. He told me his lease was expiring when i was there about 4 months ago
and i wondered how he could make a go of it...all the movie traffic would
go right past his spot and not stop in. They demolished the Mennonite
restaurant next door (never eat the Mennonite breakfast krackle -i think-
it has eggs, bacon hash and grease) to expand the Ramada hotel in time
for the Panam games.

Quite a few new things being built on Pembina...even a new Mcdonalds near
UM.

George Richards clothes....hmmmmm many tall people are there in this town?
Second Encore music is moving across the street into newer digs, and out goes
the locksmith place and I think a pizza place. (portage near valor)

I think that car dealership is moving Portage at Maryland...if it does that
will leave quite a void on that part of Portage.

Whats the best place to go...Pony Coral, Applebees, Grapes, other?
(not too expensive, where you can have a few slow beer and wing)

It didn't really go under, it seems. According to Grapes staff at the Main
Street location, the building that housed Pier 7 was purchased by some
company that wants to sell boating equipment. A mild irony - it was Grapes
what bought the old "Pier 7" boating store at that location to setup a
restaurant years back.

Nothing's happened to the building yet though. Perhaps rennovations will
occur over the winter in time for a spring launch (excuse the pun).
