Morality Play: an Imagining of a Recent Conversation
KATE. It was wrong. She had a right to know you're only fourteen.
JACK. But I'm not anymore! And anyway it was none of your business.
KATE. You're family. What do you reflects back on us.
JACK. You think people in this town think like that? They kill each other for sport!
KATE. I'm sure they have their reasons. Anyway death before dishonor my dad always says.
JACK (exacerbated). Ever since we got here, everywhere we go--everywhere!--we are either treated with suspicion and scorn, as pawns in a great game between men, priests and gods; or else as avatars of the gods themselves. Finally, I had a chance to relate to someone as another human being, as just myself--even if I am not quite myself anymore. That young woman had been helpful to us, and you had to go and spoil it! She could have been a well of information to us, and I was all set to pump her for it-- (stops short, blushing, realizing what he's just said)
KATE frowns, not buying any of it.
JACK. Anyway, can we just agree not to screw each other in the future?
KATE (raises an eyebrow, then smiles). Yes. I think I can definitely agree to that.
JACK scowls and walks away, leaving a trail of wisps of smoke...
