Asunto: [wpc2012spain] Questions from the British Team

Hello.

The British Squad have studied the draft task catalogue and the Local Regulations in our training sessions and we have the following questions. Please can you clarify the queries below?

Thanks

Barney (on behalf of the British Squad Pilots)

Questions arising from the draft task catalogue:

•             Section 1.2 - please define and quantify the word "devious".

Nino: The paragraph is a copy of that in Annex 4 which has been unchanged for many years.
Putting this in context, the sentence says "Pilots [...] who are observed flying a devious path to adjust timing/speed errors may be penalised."
So any penalties and their conditions must be defined in the individual task sheet and during the briefing.

•             Sections 2.2 and 2.3:  what happens if one pilot goes from start to

finish directly without passing any timing gates, but gets a very fast time for the speed bonus? Is the speed bonus dependent upon all the gates being crossed correctly as well?

Nino:  Going from start to finish without crossing gates scores zero in hidden gates (Qh) and time gates (Qt).
The pilot may get the highest score for speed (Qv), but, according to the formula Q = (Qh + Qt) * (1 + Qv / 1000), his or her score would be zero.

•             Sections 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4:  Please define and quantify the terms

"backtracking" and "excessive delay" in the task specific penalties.

Nino: Backtracking: flying backwards along a track line, as it has been written in the template task catalogue for many years.
Excessive delay: Pilots must fly to the start point (SP) directly after take off. Time will be measured from take-off to SP and a maximum time will be establish for each task, and written in the last-minute information sheet for pilots.

•             Section 2.3. Text is unclear. First it says "Crossing the same gate

more than once in any direction invalidates the gate", but in the paragraph below it says "If a time gate is crossed more than once, time will be extracted from the first crossing". Please clarify this.

Nino: True, the phrase in quotes can be deleted. Nevertheless, it doesn't change the results.

•             Section 3.2: The document says "Failure to land in the landing deck:

20% penalty". Is this for outside the deck, but inside the airfield?

Nino: outside of the deck but inside the airfield 20% penalty

Or is this for ANYWHERE that is outside of the defined deck, including outside of the overall airfield? Section 1.14.2 of the local regulations states that normally landing outside of the briefed airfield will result in 100% penalty, but will this rule apply to this task, if the triangle course takes pilots outside of the airfield?

Nino: normally we consider that the task is inside the aerodrome even if is outside. In briefing will be say.

•             Section 3.3: Is there a landing deck, and if yes, what is the

penalty for landing outside deck?

Nino: Landing after fuel economy tasks can be performed anywhere within the briefed airfield boundaries.

•             Section 3.4: Is the score normalised to 1000 points?

Nino: normally in otrers task yes, but unless there is some extra normalization in the local regs, tasks like 'speed triangle & out and return' are not designed to be normalized to 1000.  Normally the winner can only get 1000 by winning both parts of the task.  The scoring formula is P = Qa + Qt, so it's not normalised.

Is there a landing deck, and if yes, what is the penalty for landing outside deck?

Nino: Landing after fuel economy tasks can be performed anywhere within the briefed airfield boundaries.

Is thermalling not allowed on first two legs of this economy task?

Nino: As long as thermalling involves 360º turns, it is not possible in the first two legs.

•             Section 3.5: Is the score normalised to 1000 points?

Nino: The scoring formula is P = Qn + Qd, so it's not normalised.

Is there a landing deck, and if yes, what is the penalty for landing outside deck?

Nino: Landing after fuel economy tasks can be performed anywhere within the briefed airfield boundaries.

•             Sections 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.9, and 4.10: The time penalty "Vpen" for

each missed target is mentioned but not defined numerically. Please specify what this time penalty will be.

Nino: between 1 and 2. In breafing we will know.

•             Section 4.8: Are the latest rules on the Slow Fast task voted in at

Cima 2011 and now in the 2012 Section 10 to be used?

Nino: Yes. This has to be updated in the TC.

Questions arising from draft Local regulations:

•             Section 1.4: "One copy of the official map, based on IGN 1:200,000".

                               Nino: That is an error

Please confirm what scale of map pilots will be issued to fly with, because the one shown on the official website is 1:70,000.

Nino: in paramotor “One copy of the official map, based on detail of IGN 1:50,000 but printed on 1:70,000”

Also,  do pilots have to fly ONLY with the published competition map, or can we carry our own maps, or printouts from Google Earth?

Nino: unless it is said in the briefing of the task,  can fly with the map each one wants.

•             Section 2.1.4: "A landing deck is a clearly marked area defined at

the briefing". Please clarify exactly how the deck will be marked out

- i.e. will it be a tape on the ground? or will it be cones at the corners? Or some other method?

Nino: It will be clear for pilots and marshals

•             Section 2.2.2: "Distance will be measured for all competitors on the

same official map, of a scale not smaller than1:100,000". Is the competition map not 1:70,000?

Nino: 1:70000 is greater than 1:100,000.

Other general questions:

•             Will marquees be provided for each of the teams or do we need to

provide our own?

Nino: this is not yet decided, in June I will be able answer that question

Thanks for your response to the questions below Nino.

Do you have any more information yet regarding the marquees?

Can you confirm that we will have all the power requirements that we need, for example to run refrigerators for our own catering facilities?

Also, in section 4.5 - Clover Leaf Slalom. The catalogue says "The pilot enters the course into wind". Please can you confirm - will the direction "into wind" be defined in the briefing, with penalties applied for pilots who choose to enter from another direction, or will it be a matter for judgement of the pilot to choose? We ask this because often this task is flown in light and variable wind conditions, and it has happened before that two wind socks on either side of the course can show different wind directions.

At team leader's briefiings, will we be allowed to record the briefing on a video camera so that we can play back later to confirm that we have not missed any critical information?

Thanks

Barney

Hi Barney,

There will be electricity and water, and baths at the campsite. In addition we will have a 6x5m tent with table for team tasks and as a shadow.

the only condition for the clover will be that, after touching the near post, the opening time, the pilot must make the circuit in order, left, right, right, left on the pylons.

It will be possible to film the breafing, the condition is that these films are available to all teams and the organization.

Regards,

Nino
