The University of Chicago Writing Program
has multiple openings for a 9.5 month (paid over 12 months), benefits-eligible Writing Specialist position. The position is
a 4/4/2 teaching
load with an annual start date of September 1st.
The salary for the position is $51,667. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, though preference will be
given to applications received by March 20th.
Brief Description:
Writing Specialists assist
Humanities Instructors in a first-year
Humanities Core sequence that introduces undergraduates to humanistic thinking and inquiry.
For these courses, the Humanities curriculum is developed and taught by Humanities Instructors, while Writing Specialists provide
the specialized service of helping students face the challenges of college-level writing.
Writing Specialists teach peer feedback-focused writing seminars and provide substantive writing-focused feedback on their students' Humanities papers to help students develop transferable skills in analysis, revision, and argumentation.
We seek those who have experience in and passion for the teaching of writing,
as well as deep familiarity with the methods and argumentation of one of the Humanities disciplines introduced in the Core (such as literary studies, linguistics, philosophy, and classics).
Timeline:
The position starts September 1st,
2023. From September 5th-22nd,
before classes begin, Writing Specialists take
part in pedagogical training that orients them to teaching writing within
the particular context of the UChicago Humanities Core writing seminars. Writing Specialists begin
teaching on September 26th,
2023 and will continue through the academic year until June 15th, 2024. Pay and benefits
extend until August 31st, 2024. All instruction will take place in person on our Hyde Park campus. The job is renewable upon performance
and need.
