Faculty ESOL Specialist in the Writing Center 

The George Mason University Writing Center invites applications for the position of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Specialist. About the Department:

 

The George Mason University Writing Center provides writing support for undergraduate and graduate students from majors across the university. Services include individual writing consultations in face-to-face and online formats, enrollment tutoring for multilingual writers, workshops, graduate student writing groups, and print and online resources. The Writing Center holds 7000 – 8000 individual appointments/year, provides 100+ outreach events, and trains and mentors a staff of 40 - 50 undergraduate and graduate student tutors and administrators each year. The Writing Center conducts programs in partnership with University Libraries, Writing Across the Curriculum, Students as Scholars, the Office of Academic Standards, Graduate Student Life, and the Office of Disability Services, among others.

About the position:

 

The ESOL Specialist supports the growing population of international and domestic multilingual writers at George Mason University. This individual will collaborate with Writing Center staff to support multilingual international and domestic students at Mason through individual consultations, workshops, and writing groups; and to support consultants who work with multilingual writers. This is a 12-month, full-time administrative faculty position that begins on January 12, 2025. The ESL Specialist will join a staff of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in a busy, thriving writing center that serves undergraduate and graduate writers in all degree programs across the university. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Collaborate in training and mentoring a staff of 35-40 writing consultants to work with multilingual writers, to include 1) leading modules and workshops on working with multilingual writers for graduate consultants’ pre-semester training and for undergraduate consultants’ one-credit course, 2) delivering a program of ongoing professional development, targeted at working with multilingual writers, 3) conducting consultant observations, and 4) mentoring consultants who work with multilingual writers.
  • Administer and assess the center’s Opt-In Program, which pairs multilingual writers with consultants for regular, weekly appointments. 
  • Coordinate, lead, and assess writing groups for graduate multilingual students. 
  • Add to our existing collection of instructional resources for consultants and multilingual writers. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues on special projects.
  • Offer one-on-one consultations with advanced multilingual undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Hold administrative hours in the Writing Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, linguistics, foreign language education, or a related field;
  • ESOL writing center tutoring experience at the college level or experience teaching L2 writing for academic purposes at the college level or equivalent; and
  • Evidence of leadership and organizational skills and a collaborative approach to working with others. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in TESOL, linguistics, foreign language education, or a related field;
  • Knowledge of multilingual tutoring pedagogy and scholarship;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for L2 college writers;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for instructors or tutors of L2 college writers; 
  • Experience teaching or tutoring L2 graduate-student writers, and
  • Evidence of effective mentoring of student employees.

 

While most work occurs during business hours, Writing Center faculty occasionally attend outreach events on evenings or weekends.
