Betsy Bowen
Assistant Professor of the Practice, English
Job Description:
The Department of English at Fairfield University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice to join the faculty cohort of the new Fairfield-Bellarmine initiative that is set to launch in Fall 2023. The successful candidate will teach courses in rhetoric and composition as part of Fairfield University’s award-winning Core Writing Program, recognized this year with the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence.
The candidate must hold an advanced degree in English or Rhetoric and Composition; a terminal degree is preferred. Experience teaching first-generation students at the college or community college level is essential, as is a demonstrated commitment to helping students of diverse backgrounds learn and succeed. The teaching load is 3/4 on a semester schedule.
This position comes with the opportunity to help build a new academic program that is at the forefront of improving access to liberal education. Located at the Bridgeport, CT campus, Fairfield-Bellarmine seeks to expand liberal arts education in an area currently underserved by higher education opportunities. The program offers small class sizes and individualized advising. The curriculum will include core classes in the liberal arts which are foundational to Jesuit higher education, as well as majors in professional fields of engineering, health studies, business, and liberal arts. Students who graduate from this program will matriculate into four-year degree programs at Fairfield or elsewhere, or enter directly into the professions. Students will also have access to support services, including career advising, counseling, food service, technology support, and campus ministry. For more information about Fairfield Bellarmine, consult the website:

Applications should be received by February 10, 2023 for full consideration for preliminary interviews. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for early March and will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
