Position Description
The Columbia University Undergraduate Writing Program (UWP) in the Department of English and Comparative Literature invites applications for one-year and three-year Lecturer in Discipline positions to begin July 1, 2023.
UWP Lecturers teach first-year writing and assist the directors in developing theme-based first-year writing courses in collaboration with Columbia's faculty.
The Undergraduate Writing Program is located in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. The "University Writing" course is part of Columbia University's Core Curriculum, which is required of all first-year students in Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of General Studies, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. We particularly seek faculty with expertise in Writing Studies (including all subspecialties, but especially writing center studies). We currently teach sections of our first-year writing course in each of the following thematic areas:
· American studies
· climate humanities
· data and society
· gender and sexuality studies
· film and performing arts
· human rights
· law and justice
· medical humanities
· race and ethnicity
· urban studies
· writing for multilingual learners
Please foreground in your letter of application your background in teaching writing and which thematic area(s) you are most qualified to lead. You also may suggest other broad areas of inquiry that are not on this list.
The initial term of appointment for the three-year position is one academic year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, contingent on satisfactory performance. The expected lecturer course load is 3-3. UWP courses are capped at 14 students per section. Lecturers may also mentor 3-4 graduate students each semester, providing feedback on syllabi, leading professional development workshops and holding individualized meetings in office hours. Depending upon instructional need, some lecturers may be permitted to replace one class with work as a Writing Center consultant.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
• Fulfillment of all terminal degree requirements by June 30, 2023.
•Two years of experience teaching writing at the college level.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in writing classrooms.
•Selection criteria include, but are not limited to: scholarly promise and achievement, teaching potential, and appropriateness to our particular needs and current capabilities.
Preferred qualifications:
•A Ph.D. is preferred; however, a candidate with another terminal graduate degree and exceptional experience will receive full consideration.
•Experience in leadership, mentoring, and curriculum development within a writing program.
• Documented evidence of pedagogical excellence and evidence of professional growth and activity in writing pedagogy.
