Lecturer in Discipline (limited-term UWP lectureship)

Columbia University in the City of New York: Arts and Sciences Core - Academic: Department of English and Comparative Literature

Open Date: Apr 28, 2022

Description

The Columbia University Undergraduate Writing Program (UWP) in the Department of English and Comparative Literature invites applications for three-year Lecturer in Discipline positions to begin July 1, 2022.

UWP Lecturers teach first-year writing and provide leadership as we continue to develop our theme-based first-year writing courses in collaboration with Columbia's faculty from interdisciplinary centers.

We particularly seek faculty with expertise in Writing Studies (including all subspecialties, but especially writing center studies and translingual/transnational studies) and one or more of the following thematic areas, though we may consider applicants with expertise in other areas as well, depending upon the evolving needs of the course staff:

  • climate humanities
  • urban studies
  • American studies
  • law and justice
  • human rights
  • religious studies
Please foreground in your letter of application your background in writing studies and name which thematic area(s)/foci you are most qualified to lead.

The initial term of appointment for the three-year positions is one academic year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, contingent on satisfactory performance. The typical lecturer course load is 3-3. UWP courses are capped at 14 students per section. Lecturers will teach five sections of first-year writing over a fall and spring semester schedule. The sixth class will be replaced either for leading a cohort of graduate student instructors or consulting in the Writing Center, depending on the candidate’s interests and program need. Lecturers also mentor 5-8 graduate students each semester, providing feedback on syllabi, observing classes, and meeting in office hours.

The successful candidates will join a vibrant and collegial professional community led by four directors and other UWP lecturers. The UWP is staffed by graduate students and part-time faculty who are highly invested in undergraduate education and committed to their own professional development as teachers of writing.

The Undergraduate Writing Program is located in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. The "University Writing" course is part of Columbia University's Core Curriculum, which is required of all first-year students in Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of General Studies, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Information about the UWP and University Writing is available athttp://www.college.columbia.edu/core/uwp.

Qualifications

Terminal graduate degree: Must have fulfilled the requirements of a terminal graduate degree by June 30, 2022.

Two years of experience teaching writing at the college level is also required.

Selection criteria include, but are not limited to, scholarly promise and achievement, teaching potential, and appropriateness to our particular needs and current capabilities.

The rank of lecturer in discipline requires documented evidence of pedagogical excellence and evidence of professional growth and activity in writing pedagogy.

Preferred qualifications:

A Ph.D. is preferred; however, a candidate with another terminal graduate degree and exceptional experience will receive full consideration.

Experience of leadership, mentoring, and curriculum development within a writing program.

Scholarly engagement in writing studies.

Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in writing classrooms.

Application Instructions

All applications must be made through Columbia University’s Academic Search and Recruiting (ASR) system. Please upload the following required materials:

If this is not possible, the applicant should refer the reference provider or dossier service to the following address: Dr. Nicole B. Wallack, Chair, UWP Search, Department of English and Comparative Literature via the UWP’s administrative assistant, Mr. John Stobo (jr...@columbia.edu).
