Lecturer in Discipline (limited-term UWP lectureship)

Columbia University in the City of New York

Open Date

Jun 11, 2021

Description

The Columbia University Undergraduate Writing Program (UWP) in the Department of English and Comparative Literature invites applications for three-year and one-year Lecturer in Discipline positions to begin August 1, 2021.

UWP Lecturers teach first-year writing and provide leadership as we continue to develop our theme-based first-year writing courses in collaboration with Columbia's faculty from interdisciplinary centers.

We particularly seek faculty with expertise in one or more of the following thematic areas though we may consider applicants with expertise in other areas as well, depending upon the evolving needs of the course staff:

  • climate humanities
  • data humanities
  • gender and sexuality
  • human rights
  • race and ethnicity
  • religious studies

Please foreground in your letter of application which thematic area(s) you are most qualified to lead.

The initial term of appointment for the three-year positions is one academic year with the possibility of renewal for up to three years, contingent on satisfactory performance. The term of appointment for the one-year positions is one academic year.

Lecturers teach two sections (no more than 14 students per section) of first-year writing each fall and spring semester; mentor current graduate student instructors; plan theme-related events; and support teachers' professional development in workshops, meetings, and class observations. Lecturers' service to the program may also be fulfilled by working on our program's internal publications, assessment materials, and undergraduate journal of student writing.

The successful candidates will join a vibrant and collegial professional community led by four directors and other UWP lecturers. The UWP is staffed by graduate students and part-time faculty who are highly invested in undergraduate education and committed to their own professional development as teachers of writing.

Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.

Qualifications

Must have fulfilled the requirements of a terminal graduate degree by June 30, 2021. Two years of experience teaching writing at the college level is also required.
