Moving Forward: Updates on CCCC from the NCTE Executive Committee

The NCTE Executive Committee authorizes the following transitional steps upon the difficult decision reached on July 24, 2026. NCTE recognizes that this is a challenging time and intends to provide as much continuity and support as possible. As we begin to move forward, we want to reiterate that NCTE remains and will continue to remain committed to the college and university communities, including in writing studies and composition, as part of the broader NCTE community. This page will be used to provide transition updates.

Transition Team for Writing Studies and Rhetoric

A newly established Transition Team for Writing Studies and Rhetoric will support CCCC members during this time of transition by identifying new opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and professional learning in composition studies within NCTE. Holly Hassel, a past Chair of CCCC and an active member of the Two-Year College English Association (TYCA) with deep editorial and committee leadership experiences in both groups, will serve as chair.

The Transition Team will explore the possibilities for sustainable programming and structures for teaching, advocacy, and leadership in writing studies within NCTE. This may include exploring a different structure for writing studies within NCTE that allows greater autonomy than the previous organizational structure of CCCC allowed. These potential activities may include presentation opportunities (including conferences), organizational structures, and publications. The Transition Team will investigate the creation of an assembly within NCTE that focuses on the teaching of college writing.

The Transition Team will help ensure that writing studies and rhetoric continue to play an important role within the broader work of NCTE. This will include paths for greater collaboration with related professional organizations focused on writing, rhetoric, and English studies. The Transition Team will implement a map for CCCC members and member groups to transition to new structures that support their teaching, service, administration, and research. It will create opportunities for writing studies work in NCTE for members and provide resources and opportunities to gather and organize for those who may choose to leave NCTE.

The Team will begin work immediately, report on its progress to the NCTE Executive Committee, and create a final report and plan by June 30, 2027, unless reappointed.

2027 CCCC Annual Convention

NCTE and the 2027 CCCC Annual Convention Program Chair will meet to consider the best path forward for the event scheduled for April 2027, including whether to hold the conference and what travel grants and awards will be offered. Decisions will be shared publicly by the end of August 2026.

College Composition and Communication

NCTE is committed to publishing the two issues of College Composition and Communication journal in production through December 2026. NCTE will remove new subscription offerings effective July 31, 2026. Further, NCTE is in conversation with the journal editors regarding potential publishing through June 30, 2027, and is open to exploring options for the future of the journal beyond that time.

Studies in Writing and Rhetoric (SWR) Series

NCTE will honor all books currently under contract in the Studies in Writing and Rhetoric book series. Three books are anticipated to publish in the near future. An additional manuscript is pending conversation in accordance with author and editor preferences. Books for which there is no contract but have been in discussion or recommended for publishing may be taken to other publishers or resubmitted for NCTE consideration after January 1, 2027. NCTE is in conversations with the SWR editor.

CCCC Awards and Grants

Open awards and grants that have received applications/nominations/submissions may move forward pending conversations with each selection committee. Additional information on awards and grants will be available within the next month.
