Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor of Writing, Rhetoric & Digital Studies


Position Description


The Writing, Rhetoric & Digital Studies (WRDS) department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte seeks applications for the position of Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor of Writing, Rhetoric & Digital Studies to begin August 14, 2023. This is a 9-month non-tenure track position on an initial 3-year, renewable contract. This position includes opportunities for promotion and the potential for a 5-year, renewable contract.


Responsibilities are to teach primarily First-Year Writing, engage in curriculum and instructional development, provide appropriate service and leadership to the university, the public, and the profession, engage in ongoing professional development, and contribute to developing and promoting the new WRDS minor and major. Depending on qualifications and experience, teaching opportunities may include occasional upper-division courses in the major, as well as Liberal Studies courses within General Education. Course load is 12 credit hours per semester (three 4-credit courses or four 3-credit courses). 


Required Qualifications

 

  • MA (Lecturer) or PhD (Assistant Teaching Professor) at time of appointment in Rhetoric & Composition or related discipline

  • Record of effective teaching of college-level writing

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching First-Year Writing

  • Familiarity with the “Writing About Writing” approach to teaching college composition

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility

  • Evidence of inclusive teaching practices

  • Experience working effectively with multicultural and otherwise diverse groups of people

  • Evidence of collegiality and a commitment to work collaboratively as part of a supportive team


Desired Qualifications


  • Demonstrated success teaching a “Writing About Writing” curriculum

  • Experience and interest in learning theory, writing pedagogy, emerging media, and innovative technologies of digital communication

  • Experience in an independent writing program or department with an undergraduate major

  • Successful leadership in writing program administration, particularly writing center and/or First-Year Writing

After an initial round of Zoom interviews, provided it remains safe to do so, we expect to host on-campus interviews for finalists early in the new year.


Candidates will be asked during their initial interview to discuss how they address social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in teaching.
