Hello colleagues:
We wanted to provide an update to the members of the list so that you are aware of what has been going on during the first phase of the list reboot. This is a lengthy email, but please read it thoroughly for an understanding of the current status of the list, list operations moving forward, and next steps.
The migration process for moving the list from its earlier home (from 1993-2021) at ASU to its new home in North Dakota with the NDUS system is now complete and the list is now reactivated. We are continuing to work toward changes we spoke about last month. The list remains a national list focused on writing, writing pedagogy, writing program administration, and related issues. We are still carefully considering and sketching out the way this list will work going forward, but we do have the following to report based on the feedback we have received from our recent survey of list members.
LIST REBRANDING, POSTING, SUBSCRIBING, AND UNSUBSCRIBING
1. The list has been renamed and rebranded as WritingStudies-L. We recognize that a lot has changed since 1993, and now in 2021. There are many forums and platforms online for decentralized discussion and debate for our community. This change of name is made in recognition that our list has moved beyond WPA work and represents a point of intersection for all of us in the discipline and recognizes a new version of the list.
2. Posting to WritingStudies-L. Messages sent to the old WPA-L address will no longer be sent to the list. Please notice that this is a different address from the one you would use to subscribe or unsubscribe--functions that are described below. Please send list posts to our new email address:
WRITINGS...@listserv.nodak.edu
3. WritingStudies-L will be a moderated list for the time being. All posts that are submitted to the list will require approval from the list owners (right now, that is Samuel and Holly).
4. Functions currently permitted on the list: For the present time, the list will allow informational announcements only. This means that unlike the previous list incarnation, messages that initiate discussion or debate will not be approved to be sent to the list until further notice. Instead, you should plan to use the list as an opportunity to share information that is of importance to professionals within the writing studies community. Posts will be read by moderators and filtered. Posts that are not tagged in the subject line will be filtered out and deleted. This list is meant to grow and expand based on need, so please feel free to suggest new tags/labels to the moderators.
5. The plan this summer. The plan for the rest of the summer (June-August 2021) is to allow posts along these lines using the system above. Please select one of these tags/labels when posting. Format your email subject heading so that the tag is first, followed by an informational subject heading that lets subscribers know something about the email content:
Calls for Proposals or Papers (#CFP or #RFP)
Position Announcements (#JOB)
New publications or resources of interest (#RES)
Conference announcements or information (#CONF)
General request for information or assistance from list members (should direct replies to be made to the specific poster of the message, not to the list) (#REQ)
6. Example Subject Line: “#JOB: Asst Professor (TT) Writing Program Director at [School].” Posts will be read by moderators and filtered. Posts that are not tagged in the subject line will be filtered out and deleted. This list is meant to grow and expand based on need, so please feel free to suggest new tags to the moderators.
7. Subscribing. All new subscriptions to the list will be approved by the list owners upon receipt.
Send an e-mail message to
LIST...@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU
Leave the subject line blank (important step! Your subscription status will not go into effect through the listserv program if 'subscribe' is in the subject heading and not the body)
Type "SUBSCRIBE writingstudies-l" (without the quotation marks) in the body of your message.
8. Unsubscribing. If you need to unsubscribe to the list, please use the following instructions
Send an e-mail message to
LIST...@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU
Leave the subject line blank (important step! Your subscription status will not go into effect through the listserv program if 'unsubscribe' is in the subject heading and not the body)
Type "UNSUBSCRIBE writingstudies-l" (without the quotation marks) in the body of your message.
Please do not “Reply All” when you write this message.
You may also use "SIGNOFF writingstudies-l" (without the quotation marks) in the body of your message.
LIST INFORMATION AND ARCHIVES
1. Downloadable WPA-L Archive ZIP File (1993-2021). For historical and archival research purposes, we have prepared a downloadable ZIP file with this archive that contains the log files for all of these messages from this period (Compressed size: 1.66 GB; Uncompressed size: 3.32 GB). This time capsule is a large download, but is small enough to be carried on a flash drive.
1. Uncompressed:

2. Compressed (ZIP):

3. Archive.org:
https://archive.org/details/WPA-L-1993-2021-Complete-Uncompresse
On the right-hand side of the Archive.org page, look for the word DOWNLOAD OPTIONS. There, locate the word TEXT and click on it. Next, click on 01-1993.txt. This should be all the messages sent on WPA-L for January of 1993. Each month is archived like this, by month and year.
2. WritingStudies-L Information Page: A more permanent page is in development. For now, you can find information about the WritingStudies-L at this google document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dGCuv6hp8xPP630VVkqVWdp2NrVu7tVApH5uFSJPAsY/edit?usp=sharing
3. Accessing the Online WritingStudies-L Archives on the NDUS Server: Keep in mind that even though the list name currently displays as "Writing Studies," everyone should be able to access the older WPA-L 1993-2021 archives here using the same search function on the new NDUS server as existed on the ASU server.
The searchable list (1993-present day) archives are now available at this URL on our ListServ page at NDUS:

4. Volunteering for the WritingStudies-L Working Group: If you would like to be part of the working group that will discuss any future kinds of activities on the Writing Studies-L, please indicate your interest here (the link is also at the bottom of this message). If you have previously responded to the form, you do not need to reply again.
5. Assessing Future List Functions: As previously written, the WritingStudies-L in order to resume an open discussion function we first need to have thoughtful conversations about how and/or whether that is useful or valuable for the writing studies community. Thanks to those who have already offered to be part of the working group that will have that conversation. We will form the above-mentioned new working group that will think through and vet what might be possible and what should happen with this long-standing resource for the field. Here are some of the questions the group could address, among others:
What are the costs and benefits of opening the list beyond announcements for jobs, resources, professional info, etc?
How much of the community participation guidelines that were developed in the last several years would we want to carry over (or would new guidelines be developed) if the list reopens for discussion? Same question for reporting violations, integrating a true moderation/approval process, etc?
What would be the workload attached to a list that has hard moderation (in other words, that all messages are reviewed by moderators/list owners) before being sent to the list?
What unique needs does a listserv fill/not fill that newer technologies (Slack, social media, etc) are already filling?
There are other questions that this group may address, but these are the ones that come to mind immediately. As far as workload goes, we think this would be a few meetings over the summer (about once per month) and some offline work of drafting and editing.
The link to express your interest in this process is here. We appreciate your thoughts as we work toward this goal together of finishing the next steps of the list reboot:
