Hello friends,
We are delighted to invite applications to the doctoral program in rhetoric & composition at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
We have recently extended our application deadline to Friday, January 9, 2026. (Purdue’s information may not reflect this; rest assured we’ll accept applications past the original Dec 15 deadline.)
Our program offers excellent fellowship and placement support, five years of funding with a competitive stipend, strong support for travel funding, and options for summer teaching. Assistantship opportunities include low teaching loads in teaching composition or professional writing, consulting in Purdue’s Writing Lab, and administrative roles across these areas. Students can expect to work in multiple programs during their time at Purdue. Details can be found in our frequently asked questions or graduate program manual.
The Department of English shares Stanley Coulter Hall with the School of Languages and Cultures, and works closely with the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, the School of Information Studies, and other humanistic programs across Purdue. As a result, students interested in interdisciplinary studies can easily find collaborators who can support their work. Students complete ten courses for the PhD, and are welcome to pursue certificates offered by other programs (e.g. Digital Humanities). Our preliminary examination structure draws from coursework and is conducive to publication.
