We’ve got a Writing Center opening at the University of Connecticut for a program coordinator. This new hire will work with me (at least for the foreseeable future, but in time other faculty directors may rotate in) and our grad assistants to run a center that is active on many fronts: tutoring, campus partnerships, research, outreach to schools, faculty development, and more. The position is full-time, with excellent benefits, and is part of a strong staff union.

JOB SUMMARY

The University Writing Center is seeking a Program Coordinator who will play a central role in sustaining the operations of a dynamic, student-centered unit that delivers peer tutoring and engages in partnerships across the University. The successful candidate will coordinate and provide support for administrative aspects of the Center.

Reporting to the Director and Associate Director, the Program Coordinator will be part of a leadership team of faculty and graduate assistants that creates, implements, and assesses Center policies and procedures. They will schedule and supervise student staff, manage office operations, and serve as a liaison to other units, including the regional campuses.

We’re seeking an energetic manager and creative community builder who is accessible and responsive to students, faculty, and staff, someone who fosters a culture of collaboration and student success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participate in weekly meetings with the Faculty Directors and Graduate Student Assistant Directors to policy, set policies and procedures, and solve problems.
  2. Create and manage in-person and online tutoring schedules for a student staff of 30.
  3. Coordinate day-to-day office operations that include communications, payroll, purchasing, travel, budgeting, website maintenance, graduate assistant appointments, and research support.
  4. Serve as a liaison between the Writing Center and other UConn units, especially academic departments, the library, and other student support programs regarding center policies, procedures, and requirements.
  5. Collaborate with regional campus writing directors to align writing tutorial support across the University, which may involve occasional travel to regional campuses.
  6. Hire and manage student receptionists and office staff.
  7. Assist in hiring and managing tutoring staff.
  8. Advise and mentor student staff in contemporary peer-tutoring practices.
  9. Maintain records, extract data from online systems, analyze data, and compose reports to aid in the evaluation of the Center’s effectiveness.
  10. Oversee the Center during summer months when faculty directors are off-contract, and orient new faculty as they rotate into the director and associate director roles.
  11. Assist the directors with an annual review of Center practices and policies and coordination of implementation.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in a writing-intensive field.
  2. Four to five years of related experience.
  3. Understanding of and commitment to peer learning programs in higher education.
  4. Ability to coordinate general center operations, prioritize tasks, and exercise sound judgment on administrative and financial matters.
  5. Capacity to toggle between solving problems collaboratively and working independently.
  6. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  7. Considerable critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
  8. Ability to foster a center climate that is welcoming to a diverse student body and that encourages collaboration, community, and learning.
  9. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and a demonstrated willingness to learn other software, including online scheduling systems and university payroll, financial, and workflow systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience with writing centers, writing studies, tutoring writing, and/or teaching writing.
  2. Master’s degree in writing studies or related field.
  3. Strong digital skills, including website design, social media, and/or online tutoring.

APPOINTMENT TERMS 

This is a full-time, permanent position in the UCPEA union. Salary range is $54,734 - $60,000. This position requires in-person presence at the Storrs campus, although limited telecommuting on a hybrid basis may be allowed subject to authorization and University policy.
