Edwyna Wheadon Postgraduate Training Scholarship—Deadline: January 31

This scholarship provides funding for professional development experiences for English/language arts teachers in public educational institutions. The purpose of the scholarship is to support postgraduate training to enhance teaching skills and/or career development in teaching.
NCTE Outstanding Elementary Educator in the English Language Arts Award—Deadline: February 15
 
This award recognizes a distinguished national or international educator who has made major contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education. Nomination deadline: Feb. 15, 2023. Learn more and nominate a colleague!
NOMINATE STUDENTS: 2023 Achievement Awards in Writing and Promising Young Writers—Deadline: February 15
 
The 2023 Achievement Awards in Writing and Promising Young Writers contests are now open to submissions! NCTE encourages educators and administrators to share information on these school-based writing awards across the middle and secondary levels. Interested in serving as a reviewer for either contest above? Inquire via email for the Achievement Awards in Writing or Promising Young Writers.
David H. Russell Award—Deadline: March 1
 
This award recognizes published research in language, literature, rhetoric, teaching procedures, or cognitive processes that may sharpen the teaching or the content of English at any level.
Promising Researcher Award—Deadline: March 1

This award competition is open to individuals who have completed dissertations, theses, or initial independent studies after the dissertations.
 
James R. Squire Award—Deadline: May 1
 
This award is given by the NCTE Executive Committee in recognition of outstanding service, not only to the stature and development of NCTE and the discipline which it represents, but also to the profession of education as a whole, internationally as well as nationally.
NCTE Leadership Award for People with Disabilities—Deadline: May 1
 
This award recognizes outstanding educators with disabilities and demonstrates NCTE’s vision to provide more access for diverse voices and support the agency of diverse leaders in the field.
NCTE Advancement of People of Color Leadership Award—Deadline: May 1
 
This award is given to an NCTE member of color who supports the advancement of communities of color in the profession and contributes to promoting equity and dismantling racism.
NCTE LGBTQIA+ Advocacy & Leadership Award—Deadline: May 1
 
This award recognizes a member of the LGBTQIA+ community who has made a significant contribution to NCTE and to the development of our professional community.
NCTE George Orwell Award—Deadline: May 1
 
The NCTE Public Language Award Committee is seeking nominations for this year’s Orwell Award, which honors an author, editor, or producer of a print or non-print work that contributes to honesty and clarity in public language.
NCTE Media Literacy Award—Deadline: June 15
 
This award showcases NCTE members who have developed innovative approaches for integrating media analysis and composition into their instruction—especially programs that focus on new literacies, multimedia composition, and a broadened concept of literacy.
NCTE National Intellectual Freedom Award—Deadline: June 15
 
The purpose of the NCTE National Intellectual Freedom Award is to honor individuals, groups, or institutions that merit recognition for advancing the cause of intellectual freedom.

The Early Career Educator of Color (ECEOC) Leadership Program
 
The Early Career Educator of Color (ECEOC) Leadership Program supports early career teachers of color as they build accomplished teaching careers in literacy education. Library of Congress Literacy Awards
Library of Congress Accepting Applications for 2023 Literacy Awards

Applications are being accepted for the 2023 Library of Congress Literacy Awards from January 11 to March 1. Through the generosity of David M. Rubenstein, the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy in the United States or abroad. The awards also encourage the continuing development of innovative methods for combating illiteracy and the wide dissemination of the most effective practices.

Title I Educators: Enter the Mathical Book Giveaway! 
 
Our partners at SLMath are offering 10 NCTE members $750 grants to purchase books from the Mathical Book Prize list! These books can be used to build your classroom or school library, enrich book clubs, or be put to other creative uses in incorporating literature that features mathematics into their story. This opportunity is open to NCTE members serving Title I schools. The grant application deadline closes on March 1, 2023
 

 

NCTE has announced the results of the 2022 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) Contest.

This year, REALM saw 262 magazines enter the contest where nearly one-fourth of entries were first-time submitters. Of the submissions,157 magazines are in their first three years of submitting for the award. Entries from 42 states, Canada, and American schools in China, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico were reviewed by nearly 100 judges and the REALM committee. REALM offers four distinctions, the highest of which is the REALM First Class distinction. Thirty-eight magazines earned the REALM First Class distinction in this year’s contest.
