Dear Colleagues,
As many of us in writing center communities have just come back from IWCA and NCPTW, the editors of the Writing Center Journal want to remind you of our commitments to scholarship in the field. We saw some really wonderful sessions at IWCA and NCPTW: sessions on anti-racist work, on inclusion activism, on disability justice. We are hopeful that many of the new voices in the field, those coming from our undergraduate tutors, will push our field forward in necessary ways--decentering the whiteness in our scholarship and rethinking traditional academic scholarship.
If you have not had a chance to look at our Philosophy & Vision statement, please take a moment to read our statement here. An important component to our vision as editors is mentorship and supporting the voices of junior scholars, particularly those from marginalized communities.
We would also like to remind undergraduate peer tutors that we want to hear from you and center your voices in our issues. While we are aiming to publish a special issue focused on undergraduate research, we hope to publish at least one article per issue showcasing the work of an undergraduate tutor. With this commitment, we invite you to submit your work as a peer/undergraduate tutor and also to come and talk with the editors about your pursuits and interests in the field.
We also want to remind the entire community about one of our new sections of the journal, Provocations. These provocation pieces are meant to push the field to have more nuanced conversations on broader issues and concerns and encourage future research from scholars and create a dialogue in written text. These works can/should be nontraditional academic pieces that are roughly 2000-3000 words. While these works are not peer-reviewed, these provocations will receive thoughtful feedback from the editors in order to enrich our scholarly conversations and help us create a sustainable dialogue for the writing center community. While at the conference, we heard many good conversations--and we hope some of you will use the energy from Vancouver and Omaha to consider writing a provocation piece for us.
Please stay on the lookout for more news and information from us! We will soon have issue 40.2 out (and please do take a moment to read issue 40.1 if you have not had the opportunity, as well as past issues that are now archived on Digital Commons) and will be announcing a Zoom writing retreat to kick off the spring semester.
Sincerely,
