Duties and Responsibilities:

The Writing Center Specialist (tutor) for the Smith Vidal Literacy and Language Center (SVLLC) is a full-time, twelve-month, contractual staff position (100% Smith Vidal Literacy and Language Center). The incumbent reports to and works collaboratively with the Chair of the Department of Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies. The incumbent also creates and implements programs and services designed to assist English majors and students enrolled in reading, composition, and modern languages courses to develop their writing, reading and foreign language skills; designs and presents tutoring sessions, conducts individual conferences, and assists with staff training and supervision. The Writing Center Specialist also maintains records, collects and analyzes data, and develops and maintains good relationships with the University faculty and appropriate academic support program and services. The primary responsibilities of the Writing Center Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Development and Promotion:

• Develops and maintains working relationships with faculty, student service entities, and departments across campus.

• Assists with publicity efforts as determined by the center coordinator.

• Assists with the creation of a professional and efficient working environment in the center.

 

Supervision and Staff Development:

• Assists with the training of SVLLC tutors by conducting on-the-job workshops (e.g., during monthly staff meetings or quarterly workshops).

• Assists with the evaluation of assistants and tutors.

• Assists with mentoring new tutors.

• Assists with the daily operation of SVLLC, as determined by the coordinator.

 

Faculty Development:

• Collaborates with the implementation of projects with faculty.

• Helps to fosters communication about writing and learning among faculty and students.

 

Tutoring Responsibilities:

• Develops and implements programs/services designed to assist students in developing their writing/reading skills, especially those enrolled in developmental reading and writing courses and those required to take the English Proficiency Examination (EPE).

• Creates learning activities/modules to help student develop their reading/writing skills.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assists with the development and implementation of effective assessment tools for staff and Center activities.

• Assists with the writing of a semester and/or a final report.

• Carries out duties and responsibilities

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

A Master’s degree in English, Reading, Rhetoric/Composition, or Linguistics required.

 

Experience

A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a Writing Center or instructional laboratory environment required.

A minimum of one (1) year of experience tutoring and/or other forms of instruction.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

College-level language skills.

Ability to work independently.

Reliable

Ability to work well with others.

Proficient in Microsoft Office product knowledge and usage.

Working knowledge of and experience with various modes of instructional technology.

Technological IT knowledge a plus.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Professional skills and attitude.

 

Conditions of Employment

Must be willing to work on campus or remotely, as needed.

Must be willing to work some evenings/ Saturdays, as needed.

Must be willing to comply with campus safety protocols.
