Dear Colleagues,

The first-year writing program at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor position.  We are re-structuring our first-year writing programming and placement process. We are seeking someone with a specialty in first-year writing to help us as we get the new program started. Please see below for more details on the position. A link is offered below.

Assistant Professor in First-year Writing Program (https://cbu.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=144893)

About Christian Brothers University:

CBU is committed to creating and maintaining a rigorous and enriching learning experience for our students by providing them the best instruction and support by a superior faculty and staff. CBU encourages opportunities to celebrate diversity in an environment that prepares our students to be global citizens. CBU is an attractive and safe campus environment, and it is quite possibly one of the friendliest campuses anywhere.

Job Description:

The Department of Literature and Languages at Christian Brothers University invites applications for tenure track position of Assistant Professor of English with a specialty in first-year writing. The ideal candidate will specialize in teaching writing to multi-language learners and traditionally labeled "developing" or "basic" writers, practice innovative pedagogies that are culturally responsive, and demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We seek a colleague with research, teaching, or other experiences that demonstrate a clear commitment to the multiple ways of knowledge production engaged in by students from diverse backgrounds.  A teacher-scholar-activist would bring knowledge of anti-racist pedagogies and the ways faculty can support the academic work and development of many types of writers. Our first-year writing program is in transition to a new and more culturally inclusive and critical literacy-centering structure. This addition to our faculty would be a contributor to the implementation of that re-visioning.

This position carries teaching, service expectations, and professional development, in that order of priority. The standard teaching load is 4/4 with a 9-month contract. This new faculty member would also contribute to summer administration of first-year writing and therefore would carry a summer administrative stipend.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Teach 12 hours per semester (a 4/4 teaching load),

·         Teach general education courses in first-year composition,

·         Collaborate with the WPA on New Student Orientations and writing placements for in-coming students, and

·         Engage in continuing professional development, which can include attending conferences, publishing critical and/or creative scholarship, participating in seminars, completing University-sponsored trainings, etc.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Engage in active and continuing professional development.

·         Participate on university committees and in shared governance.

The Department of Literature and Languages is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty. We view writing as central to our Lasallian commitment to social justice and community engagement. As such, we encourage a teaching and research agenda in support of this mission. Rooted in the heart of Memphis, CBU is primarily a teaching institution. We strive to contribute to a more just and prosperous community in a city with a rich cultural history and thriving arts scene.

Requirements:

Job Qualifications and Requirements:

·         Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, Writing Studies, or related field;

·         Undergraduate teaching experience required;

·         To be considered for the appointment of Assistant Professor, the candidate must have Ph.D. in hand by August of 2022.

Applications will be reviewed starting May 11, 2022.
