I good friend of mine started an opensource project about 2years ago
called DaviCal

It's an implementation of CalDav

Clients, like mozilla, Kontact, apple ical, evolution speak caldav to
the server. It's basically webdav with calendaring built in (icalendar
format).

What is needs is more embedded client implementations -- and for
Google calendar (and it's foes) to support caldav. This isn't too far
away i reckon.
