Has someone stolen the WOYP book club list? Lately I have been getting messages from that list with links supposedly to humorous or sexy material but with only very little, generic text in the note and with sender names I don't recognize. I presume these are actually links to malware sites (I tend to be suspicious that way) and so delete them without opening. I apologize if they are legitimate but thought I should ask whoever is administering it to check.

All the best,

I've gotten two and just deleted them. I recognise the names of the two I've gotten, but they were clearly spam due to spelling & punctuation.

I have been hoping to revive it and get some good discussions about books going, but now I am not sure if I should do that, if this is becoming a source of spam.

I'm not sure what's going on.
I'm the owner, and I just added one moderator who I don't think is causing the spam.  I, oddly enough, have NOT seen spam lately.  Sadly, I was just getting ready to post about some books I've been reading (would be  posting over the next week or so, when work has finally calmed down a bit).

I'll investigate...

Me too. I was the mod mentioned and between the time I got a report of possible spam (the 17th) and when i had a chance to check it (today alas-life has been occuring with great vim and vigor right now) I was locked out as a mod.

Now this is seriously odd.  I just logged into the Google Groups and saw all the messages you're talking about, none of those came through to me unless my spam filter picked them up automatically.

Richard Cartwright is still listed as a manager, not sure why that would have changed.

I am uber confused.  And marking all those spam messages as spam in the Google Groups page.

Ok, for the moment, I have done the following:
1) All messages require moderation.  I will undo this at some point, but for now, it seems prudent.
2) Any new members that want to join will have to request an invite.  I've asked for them to  prove they are human and not a spam-bot. :)
3) I have marked all the messages that are truly spam back since September as spam.

I wish there were an option for new members requiring approval before they can post, but the closest is that new members posts are moderated and at the moment, that's not good enough.

Hopefully this will get things under control.  I'm on vacation (ish) from work now through the end of the year so I should be able to keep an eye on things.

Happy holidays,
kristin
