I propose that, at least for now, we no longer try to keep discussions "Palm-centric".  If others chime in disagreeing, we can always revert.

Buzz, how long will you be back in the UK?

Bert, you guys are getting the brunt of the storm that came through here a couple of days ago.  It was far weaker while here, and left only a couple of inches of snow behind.  From what I'm hearing, it is going to be a far more brutal experience back east.  You be careful out there.

I'm currently using an Amazon Fire 7" tablet for most of my on-the-move needs.  I picked up one for the wife and one for me back before Christmas.  Amazon had a sale on them at $35 rsch, which I couldn't resist.  )even the normal price of $49.95 is quite reasonable).  They are not the most powerful pieces of kit I've ever had, but work astonishingly well in my eyes.  I use mine for ebook reading, video viewing, music, light email, web-surfing, calendar, and other things.

Take care  y'all!

Hi all

Feel slightly guilty replying from a scorching hot New Zealand summer's day under an azure blue sky. My thoughts are with those facing the storm. I was in DC and Virginia twice on business when the eastern seaboard, federal offices and schools were closed and remember abandoning my Hertz Taurus daily to hike from my hotel the two miles across the empty state highway intersection to the Sprint campus I was seconded to!

I'd second the proposal to widen any discussion for the reasons I've already stated but happy to go with the majority if others prefer not.

Bob - I will be back in the UK for three weeks and my eldest, with whom I'm traveling, will stay an extra week for more time with her Nana.

Stay safe and hope you all weather the storm with as little drama as possible.

I don't think we've ever been Palm OS only here have we? It's been what, 15 years of us doing this and I can remember all types of devices being talked about.

Even Jeff himself moved back and forth between different OSes.

I always saw this group as just general thinkers talking about what stuff they are using and enjoying for writing, organizing, etc.

We've covered all types of topics in the past. I see no reason to worry about us wandering "off topic" so to speak since there isn't really a topic to worry about!

Bring it all on.

When you put it like that, Aaron... :-)

I got to know Diana Kimball through her now sadly defunct 24 Hour Book Club. She's a product designer involved in handheld tech and I enjoy her insights and commentary and thought others here might too.

Hey, make me jealous, Buzz. Two feet of snow here (about 2/3rds of a meter) and still snowing. We also have thick fog. The storm should finally end tonight. I have a plot guy coming sometime tomorrow. Once he gets our driveway plowed out I have to hike up the hill to where I parked the car and dig that out. Monday afternoon I have to go to the airport (an hour away) to pick up my wife, who is in San Diego visiting her brother.
I have always wanted portable equipment for one reason or another. I love my Microsoft Surface 2 and do nearly everything on it, including covering  live streamed events. The screen is a little small for multi-window things, but I manage to fit two windows on it. I can turn it into a laptop by attaching a USB hub that then is attached to my mouse, keyboard, and external half TB solid state drive. I do have an older laptop, which my wife uses mainly these days, and a three-year-old desktop with a big screen, but the Surface is so fast & versatile that I prefer to use it even with the smaller screen.

It is blazing fast for one thing. I timed a reboot once at 32 seconds. That is really handy if I have to reboot in the middle of a streaming event, which has happened. I upgraded to Windows 10 this fall (I took the tablet in to have all the crapware cleaned out of it after 18 months of heavy use, and it was less expensive to go to Win 10 than to maintain Win 8). Honestly I preferred Win 8, but that is history now.

I am using MS Edge. Unfortunately it tends to freeze up sometimes, which can require a full reset to release. But it works better with the Microsoft e-mail and calendar that one of my two main clients, Saugatuck Technology, uses. The other one, SiliconAngle/Wikibon, uses Google calendar, and I use Pimlical, the redesign of the old Datebk6 from the Palm, as my personal calendar on my Galaxy 6S, so I have ended up juggling three calendars. Pimlical and the Google calendar synchronize automatically, but I have to reenter everything into the Microsoft calendar by hand. Annoying, and if I'm not careful I can have three alarms ringing at the start of an event. I would eliminate Pimlical except it is much better than Google at managing tasks, and I live by my task list. And it is handy when I need to see my calendar and don't have an Internet connection.

I also use HanDBase on my phone to track my grocery list, my music library, wine tastings, and my books. It is particularly handy for my music library, which at the moment is fragmented among my old Apple iPod, my main MP3 library on my FiiO, Amazon and YouTube. The database is the only place where I have everything listed and can find where things are and when I last listened to something, that sort of thing.

So the Palm lives on in spirit for me, in some of the software.

All the best, Bert
