Today is the beginning of what could be a record warmup here in the heart of America.  The weatherpeople are predicting 70 degree temperatures later in the week.  I'll take it!  The older I get, the less enamored of the cold I seem to become.

Bert, do you use the desktop version of HandDBase?  I'm wanting something that will sync to my devices as well as function on the desktops  I wondered if you also had such a setup.

Buzz, I hope you are enjoying your summer down under,  How's the tourist trade now?

Going to spend time with the love of my life here for Valentine's Day  Hope you're all doing well!

I propose that, at least for now, we no longer try to keep discussions
"Palm-centric". If others chime in disagreeing, we can always revert.

Buzz, how long will you be back in the UK?

Bert, you guys are getting the brunt of the storm that came through here a
couple of days ago. It was far weaker while here, and left only a couple
of inches of snow behind. From what I'm hearing, it is going to be a far
more brutal experience back east. You be careful out there.

I'm currently using an Amazon Fire 7" tablet for most of my on-the-move
needs. I picked up one for the wife and one for me back before Christmas.
Amazon had a sale on them at $35 rsch, which I couldn't resist. )even the
normal price of $49.95 is quite reasonable). They are not the most
powerful pieces of kit I've ever had, but work astonishingly well in my
eyes. I use mine for ebook reading, video viewing, music, light email,
web-surfing, calendar, and other things.

Take care y'all!

Hi all

Feel slightly guilty replying from a scorching hot New Zealand summer's
day under an azure blue sky. My thoughts are with those facing the
storm. I was in DC and Virginia twice on business when the eastern
seaboard, federal offices and schools were closed and remember
abandoning my Hertz Taurus daily to hike from my hotel the two miles
across the empty state highway intersection to the Sprint campus I was
seconded to!

I'd second the proposal to widen any discussion for the reasons I've
already stated but happy to go with the majority if others prefer not.

Bob - I will be back in the UK for three weeks and my eldest, with whom
I'm traveling, will stay an extra week for more time with her Nana.

Stay safe and hope you all weather the storm with as little drama as
possible.

I don't think we've ever been Palm OS only here have we? It's been what, 15
years of us doing this and I can remember all types of devices being talked
about.

Even Jeff himself moved back and forth between different OSes.

I always saw this group as just general thinkers talking about what stuff
they are using and enjoying for writing, organizing, etc.

We've covered all types of topics in the past. I see no reason to worry
about us wandering "off topic" so to speak since there isn't really a topic
to worry about!

Bring it all on.

When you put it like that, Aaron... :-)

I got to know Diana Kimball through her now sadly defunct 24 Hour Book
Club. She's a product designer involved in handheld tech and I enjoy her
insights and commentary and thought others here might too.

Hey, make me jealous, Buzz. Two feet of snow here (about 2/3rds of a meter)
and still snowing. We also have thick fog. The storm should finally end
tonight. I have a plot guy coming sometime tomorrow. Once he gets our
driveway plowed out I have to hike up the hill to where I parked the car
and dig that out. Monday afternoon I have to go to the airport (an hour
away) to pick up my wife, who is in San Diego visiting her brother.
I have always wanted portable equipment for one reason or another. I love
my Microsoft Surface 2 and do nearly everything on it, including covering
live streamed events. The screen is a little small for multi-window things,
but I manage to fit two windows on it. I can turn it into a laptop by
attaching a USB hub that then is attached to my mouse, keyboard, and
external half TB solid state drive. I do have an older laptop, which my
wife uses mainly these days, and a three-year-old desktop with a big
screen, but the Surface is so fast & versatile that I prefer to use it even
with the smaller screen.

It is blazing fast for one thing. I timed a reboot once at 32 seconds. That
is really handy if I have to reboot in the middle of a streaming event,
which has happened. I upgraded to Windows 10 this fall (I took the tablet
in to have all the crapware cleaned out of it after 18 months of heavy use,
and it was less expensive to go to Win 10 than to maintain Win 8). Honestly
I preferred Win 8, but that is history now.

I am using MS Edge. Unfortunately it tends to freeze up sometimes, which
can require a full reset to release. But it works better with the Microsoft
e-mail and calendar that one of my two main clients, Saugatuck Technology,
uses. The other one, SiliconAngle/Wikibon, uses Google calendar, and I use
Pimlical, the redesign of the old Datebk6 from the Palm, as my personal
calendar on my Galaxy 6S, so I have ended up juggling three calendars.
Pimlical and the Google calendar synchronize automatically, but I have to
reenter everything into the Microsoft calendar by hand. Annoying, and if
I'm not careful I can have three alarms ringing at the start of an event. I
would eliminate Pimlical except it is much better than Google at managing
tasks, and I live by my task list. And it is handy when I need to see my
calendar and don't have an Internet connection.

I also use HanDBase on my phone to track my grocery list, my music library,
wine tastings, and my books. It is particularly handy for my music library,
which at the moment is fragmented among my old Apple iPod, my main MP3
library on my FiiO, Amazon and YouTube. The database is the only place
where I have everything listed and can find where things are and when I
last listened to something, that sort of thing.

So the Palm lives on in spirit for me, in some of the software.

All the best, Bert

Bob,

I haven't been using HanDBase desktop since I had the tablet upgraded in November. I do everything in the databases on my Android phone. No experience syncing,vI do my backups manually, connecting the phone to the tablet and just drag and drop. Sorry, I can't provide much help except to say that HanDBase desktop worked well on Win 8.1. I could load it on the tablet under Win 10 and see how it does.

All the best, Bert

Kia ora Bob and all

24 degrees and humid here in the Land of the Long White Cloud and the cicadas and crickets are warming up for the dusk chorus. Enjoying the second half of summer here - short sleeve shirts to work, BBQ dinners on the deck and sheep bleating because the paddocks are drying up. Luckily, we have had periodic rain but the last week has been hot and dry so we're hoping for some rainfall to fill the tanks and freshen up the grazing.

I rarely use databases but have recently uploaded and found the following useful:

Pocket - A simple, catch all web + apps bookmarking service which I am using to capture work and personal stuff for later reference.
WhatsApp - My Dad lives on his own 12,000 miles away in the UK and has worsening demntia. WhatsApp cross-platform messenger has proven very useful a 24/7 immediate update channel between me, my sister (in Switzerland) and a friend of my Dad (also in the UK) during recent challenges and hospitalisations. My kids are, like, Dad, like, WhatsApp is so yesterday. :-)
Web Alert and Site-Monitoring.NET widgets - We have had some issues with our ISP not playing nice with the web/email server our B&B business is on, leading to the site and email going offline.  These two services help me track uptime (100% since we moved to a static IP address) and will alert me to outages if they happen again.
FlightAware app - Daughter no.3 has been on a long trip in South Africa, most recently volunteering in an HIV/AIDS orphanage nr. Jo'burg. She is on her way home tonight (she just landed in Sydney, Australia 15 minutes ago) and, God willing, we'll be seeing her walk into the Auckland arrivals hall in just over 6 hours' time (00:15 NZ time).

Cheers

Hi Buzz,

You should be picking up daughter #3 right now. Did you feel the earthquake yesterday? I work with someone who lives in NZ who posted about it on Yammer.

All the best, Bert
