I don't know how long you have been playing or what level you are or
your paladin play experience in general but there are a few things I
would like to correct here.
1- They do not have a low damage output. In end game raiding a
decently geared retribution paladin can put out very nice damage.
2- The tanking talent tree is not Retribution, it is the Protection
tree.
3- Attaining a high level paladin is not challenging as much as it is
exhausting. For the first 20 levels leveling you have a very small
selection of offensive abilities to use while questing and instancing,
making it quite a boring experience. Once you hit 80 though, they are
very fun to play as they can fill all 3 roles very well, they are the
best single target healers in the game, the best aoe tanks in the
game, and a very good dps class. From personal experience, the hardest
part of maintaining a raiding level 80 paladin is keeping all sets of
gear up to date. Any decent raiding paladin should have sets for AT
LEAST two talent specializations, if not all three.
