School Gardens Project Assistant

Application Deadline: Tuesday February, 16th 2010

Duration: Temporary, March to October 2010

Hours: 10 hours per week. During the months of April and May, some additional hours will be required.

Wage: $11-$15 per hour, based on experience

 

Description

The Regional Environmental Council, Inc. (REC), a grassroots, nonprofit, environmental justice organization

with a 38-year history of working for environmental sustainability and social justice, is seeking candidates for

our School Gardens Project Assistant. This part-time, temporary position will be responsible for supporting the

Worcester School Garden Initiative, a collaborative effort between the REC’s Food Justice Program and the

Worcester Advisory Food Policy Council’s Hunger-Free & Healthy Project. The initiative is designed to bring

the educational, nutritional, and social benefits of gardening to Worcester Public Schools. The School Gardens

Project Assistant will provide support in accomplishing the following goals:

 

o Facilitating a partnership between the REC, Hunger-Free & Healthy, and the Worcester Public Schools.

o Building 5 new gardens at Worcester Public Schools.

o Compiling and creating educational resources for use in Worcester Public Schools.

o Providing ongoing technical and other support to school principals, teachers and administrators.

 

Responsibilities:

1. project planning and implementation

2. curriculum research

3. purchasing supplies, recruiting and managing volunteers, designing and building 5 new raised-bed

gardens

4. other duties as assigned

 

Skills and Experience

We are especially seeking candidates with the following skills and experience:

o Gardening (including, planning and designing)

o Youth work (particularly with low-income urban youth of

color)

o Strong organizational skills, ability to set and keep

deadlines, attention to detail

o Demonstrated interest in and commitment to

environmental and social justice

 

o Curriculum development or teaching

experience

o Light to medium construction skills

o Volunteer recruitment and management

experience

o Comfort with MSOffice (Word, Excel,

Outlook, etc.)
