PokemonPrism and Pokemon Brown, made by the same creator left a good impression on me. Prism is SUPER impressive for a Gen 2 hack. I was kind of enjoying Inclement Emerald before Scarlet/Violet dropped but I'm feeling kind of aimless since it's a roguelike. I'd still recommend it to anyone who really likes battling tons of different pokemon and making teams... Pokemon Crown looks ... interesting. It's a grid-based autobattler, really different. I kind of want to check it out but I'm gonna watch a few more eps of someone else playing before I decide if I want to bother.

The DS games are hard to edit, still, I think there's been more luck changing stuff up on the switch DP games since they were made in Unity, hahaha. Volt White is supposed to be really good but I haven't tried it.

Most fangames want to make an "adult" story but it ends up being edgy and too teenager-y for my liking, so I don't play most romhacks or fangames. Insurgence was the worst with this in my recent memory. Wait, no, I heard Pokemon Clover (made by a bunch of 4channers) was really good but I couldn't get past some of the mean jokes.

Haha! I just watched HeroVoltsy play some of Pokemon Crown. I think it looks really ambitious, but I dunno if it's my vibe.

And yeah, I've heard that a lot of the DS games are rough to make edits to. It's why the ranger series only has the "retain loops" hack which... Isn't much, but still impressive. And useful.

I've never heard of prism or brown before, or at least I don't think so. Might have to give them a try! :3

And for sure. I know a lot of games wanna try so hard to appeal to the older fans, or have a lot of cool backstory, but to me? Sometimes too many of the games feel convoluted or too unreal. I understand it's a pokemon game, but I vaguely remember one hack... I think it was unbound? It's good, but the story is a LOT.

^hard agree on the adult story point imo - i played pokemon insurgence a while back and for as impressive as i think it is technically and content-wise i still cant help but feel the story goes WAY overboard in the edgy factor and loops back to being hard to take seriously (and does so Very Quickly too given the very first thing that happens in the story is a bloody cult sacrifice)

my favorite hack to date has probably been renegade platinum. idk why its stuck with me so hard compared to other since i played but i liked it a lot for feeling basically just like a really nicely polished version of the original game without falling into the frustratingly common pitfall of making it extremely difficult for basically anyone who doesnt play competitive LOL

I know right! Not to mention I've been admittedly keeping up with the pokemonROMhacks subreddit, and some of the projects people post snippets of on there make me pretty happy to see that it's no dying art!

I will definitely have to check out Emerald Rogue! Sounds fun! :>

And @cheet I love that you named all your team pokemon after food. I always theme mine after greek gods. Nice to know other people are out there who keep their nicknames consistent. >:D

Oh oops, I said Inclement Emerald but I actually meant Emerald Rogue. It was pretty fun for a while, but I did the least annoying missions and I don't really want to try the annoying ones. There's also the obvious "this pokemon is bad (gameplay-wise) I will never use it" syndrome, leading me to grab mostly starters, pseudos, and some good gimmick mons any time I could. I have little confidence in low BST mons, even if I like them.

I really liked Crystal Clear! Its an open world pokemon that takes place post gold/silver/crystal! Theres no actual story but thats the beauty of it imo, you can make up your own story, the game is completely customizable right down to the sprites you use for your trainer (you can literally patch your own custom sprites into the game). There are some bits that break the immersion (spoilered just in case you want to see for yourself??) the most glaring is that the creator inserted himself and his friends as the elite four and champion but overall i think that the pros outweigh its cons!

I also remember really liking Pokemon Light Platinum when it first came out, though its been a while since i last played, i think it has one of those edgier stories ^^' my opinion on it might change if i played it again lol
