NOTE - my apologies for the scrambled format. I need sleep, so I am going to stop messing with it for tonight. Hopefully it will be better next time!
It’s that time of year again when the organization I work for hosts our annual conference that sends me to exotic parts of the world and I take you with me, virtually of course. Two years ago it was Porto, Portugal and this year New York City! Last year the location was Seattle, but due to the economy only a handful of staff went. I was reminded of how I was feeling last year just before the conference throughout the past couple of weeks. At first I, of course, wanted to go but as time went on and after numerous late nights and ridiculous overtime hours I was just grateful that those who were going were leaving town and would quit bothering me! These last couple of weeks were bringing back these same thoughts, but with the added “Oh dear, they’re taking me with them!” Of course, if you know me even slightly, you know that I LOVE the big city and even though I fulfilled my hours for the month in two weeks time, I am grateful to be here. I do want to take this opportunity to tell my Roy and the boys how much I appreciate their tolerance of all of this. I’ve working at ALL hours these past weeks and they’ve been very patient and helpful when I’ve needed them to be.
I’ve been on the ground here for just over 24 hours. It is a packed week with conference duties, so several of us had pre-arranged reservations for dinner last night at a quaint little Italian place followed by a Broadway show just after. After landing, we had time to drop our luggage and throw on nice clothes and then tackle the art of “hailing a cab” without getting hit by it or honked at. We settled for a Lincoln Towncar service since it was empty and since we didn’t have a clue what we were doing.

The Broadway show we saw was “Promises, Promises” starring: Sean Hayes (Jack, Will & Grace), Kristin Chenoweth (April on Glee, as well as several movies including R.V. recently), Tony Goldwyn, The Good Wife, Criminal Intent, etc. and Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live primarily, but lots of smaller roles in popular TV shows). It was fabulous! Afterwards we went around to the stage door and got to be up-close to the stars! Naturally, all I took (to reduce weight in my purse!) was my camera phone – so my pics are not great. The better ones are of Kristen and Molly. My colleagues got good ones of the rest and I will share when I get copies.

And of course, my personal favorite - Kristen Chenoweth’s dog being held by one of her ‘people.’
Instead of taking a cab back to the hotel, we elected to walk. The original plan was to go to the top of the Empire State Building and hit Magnolia Bakery for a cupcake on our back. By the time the show ended it was 10:45 and we all had a glazed over look from sheer exhaustion of travel combined with days of little to no sleep. We decided to try and do the extra stuff another night. I think we were all thinking it, but none of us wanted to say it – we are getting old!
Below were some of the sight’s along the route home…
Radio City Music Hall
Rockefeller Center

David Letterman's Late Show
And just for Bryce who would have a staple diet of Hot Dogs if we allowed him to…
When I called and told him there were Hot Dog vendors on almost every corner he said “I’ve got to go there!” I fully expect him to one day… just for a hot dog.
We also walked past Grand Central Station and Times Square (AMAZING), but the images wouldn’t load so look for them another time.
Our hotel is in Midtown Manhattan, it is the Intercontinental Barclay. Out my window I have a beautiful view of the Waldorf Astoria just across the street – just my luck, isn’t it? Not that I’m complaining, this hotel is exquisite too! In the image below you can see a side entrance to our hotel with the Chrysler Building in the background.
Tonight for dinner a few of us took one of our biggest sponsors to dinner. They sponsor us in so many ways and even added to it this year by providing a dinner yacht cruise around NYC and up to the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday night. We wanted to show them our appreciation. We took them to Bar Americain, owned by Chef Bobby Flay. Of course, he wasn’t there but the food was divine!
Tomorrow is our Staff meeting ALL DAY – so I highly doubt I’ll be doing anything noteworthy. You’ll be the first to know about it if I do.
Thanks for joining me on this adventure – hopefully we’ll get to do all of the things a tourist should do!
