MEAS Study on Emerging Private Sector Extension Models

Private sector extension initiatives, including public-private partnerships, are rapidly expanding worldwide. However, relatively little is known about the various approaches of private extension providers to reach smallholder farmers in developing countries. To fill this knowledge gap, researchers Dr. Miguel Gómez and MS student Mary Kate Wheeler from Cornell University, and Ben Mueller from the University of Illinois, are carrying out a MEAS study for USAID.

The objective of this study is to document private sector extension approaches that target smallholder farmers worldwide. The research team is using a survey to gather information on a wide range of private sector extension services, including those led by for-profit companies, growers' associations and NGOs. Their goal is to identify and characterize emerging private sector extension models, and use findings to develop best practices that will inform future program development and implementation. The findings will be valuable to USAID, donors and private/public decision makers interested in increasing the profitable participation of smallholder farmers in food value chains.

If you are part of a private organization (commercial business, non-for-profit organization or growers' association), or a public-private partnership (PPP) that offers extension services to smallholder farmers, we hope you will help us in this effort!

Please consider participating in this MEAS study by completing a survey on behalf of your organization. You can download the survey as a MS Word file in English, French or Spanish, using one of the links below.  It should take about 30 minutes to complete, and you are welcome to consult with your close colleagues who may be able to assist you with the survey.

Please send completed surveys to Mary Kate Wheeler (mk...@cornell.edu), before April 30.  If you prefer to complete the survey by phone or skype, please email Mary Kate to schedule a call.

Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
