Hello summer and semester volunteers!
From talking to many of you summer volunteers it sounds like a bittersweet time... You are getting excited to get home and see loved ones (or sample favorite foods, drinks, etc.) but it's shocking to imagine that your time in Namibia is coming to a close. I understand. Namibia is an amazing, unique, (complicated, frustrating), beautiful, diverse country and I know you all have had experiences of a lifetime. Two months probably seems like just the beginning but I know that Namibia will always remain in your hearts and I hope that you'll find a way to return one day.
As you remember (summer volunteers), I've requested that regional transportation pick you up at your sites on Monday, 2 August and bring you to BPU in Windhoek. As you've become accustomed to the ways of Namibia by now, I know you'll be patient with the exact timing of these pick-ups. :) I'll do my best to be in close contact with you and the drivers. On Tuesday, 3 August, we'll have some free time for you to do some last minute shopping in Windhoek, a few sessions regarding adjusting back to life in the US, a
game! and finally a celebratory dinner out! On Wednesday morning, government transport will take us to the airport for our final goodbyes. :(
Semester volunteers will be in Windhoek starting on Saturday, 31 July for their mid-service conference. Justine and Scott travel back to site on Tuesday, 3 August via regional transport so you all will have one night together to hang out and reconnect!
Summer volunteers, I have some suggestions for considerations in your final week and a half...
- Will you stay in touch with your school? If so, how? Make sure you get the best contact information for your school, host families, colleagues and learners.
- What will be your legacy? Are there any steps you've put in place or can still put in place to make the work you've done this summer sustainable?
- How will you say your goodbyes? Are you planning any sort of goodbye party, meal or meeting?
I am so incredibly proud of all of you. This group has shown so much courage, fortitude, flexibility and dedication! It's been an absolute pleasure to get to know each and every one of you and to accompany you on this journey. Thank you for all of your hard work this summer!
Please let me know how I can assist and support you in your final days at site! I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Reminder: The essay contest deadline is Friday! I request that ALL volunteers please submit something! :) Again, you can just pull an entry from your blog if you want, polish it up (or not) and sent it in! Or, if you want to go for the gold, add some Word Art! (I'm not going to name names...but someone has already been so creative. ;)
All the best,
Jocie
