Until recently I was a Drupal zealot.

In exchange for some very expensive customizations on one of my
guitars I'm putting together a website for a local luthier (maker of
stringed instruments).

He insisted on using Wordpress as he has already had a look and
determined that it was easy enough for him to use. I tried to sway him
to use Drupal but he wouldn't budge. So I installed Wordpress and
started to configure it.

WOW! It has come a long way. To update the core and plugins is a
matter of a few clicks from the WP interface itself. (after backing up
the site of course)

Updating posts and adding pages is completely intuitive and hard to
get wrong really.

So next time you need to put together a website that you hope to not
have to maintain for the rest of your God given years, have a look
into WordPress. It's easy enough that anyone with basic computer
literacy can completely maintain it themselves. I find that with
Drupal I'm always needing to revisit and assist in updates and even
simple tasks like showing people how to post to the blog.

Drupal is awesome in its own right for sure though. The modules offer
so much versatility when they work properly and are maintained by an
active group of Drupalites.

Wordpress is amazing, especially the final 3+ versions. I found that
theming is also a lot easier, just cut up your psd into html and code
it into CSS, voila, Wordpress Theme is done.

In the updating itself, I maintain 12 installations of Wordpress with
clients, sometimes you have to wait maybe a week when upgrading your
Wordpress in order to give the plugin developers some time to update
their plugins and then you can update everything within minutes, on
the road (I do it on my iPhone or from work) without the need of ftp
access.

For some clients I hooked up Posterous to their Wordpress installation
sothat they can email posts with attachments to an email address and
Posterous auto posts to Wordpress, Facebook and their Twitter account.
I did this setup for the local nama hatta as well, great social media
coverage :)

I must say that Drupal is more a CMS than Wordpress, and modularity is
great of Drupal. But for quick websites, Wordpress rocks and are
maintainable. You should check out Buddypress also, wonderful social
form of Wordpress, and the exciting Prologue Theme which is based on a
Twitter like layout and workflow with Wordpress. If you need simple
minimalistic forums, BBpress is nice also.

i haven't used wordpress except years ago when it couldn't compare to
drupal feature wise. i've read a lot of praise about wordpress since,
and it seems it's grown a lot recently.

from what experience accounts i read, many similar to vinod bihar
prabhu's, i also suspect that wordpress is easier to set up, maintain,
and hand over to non-technical end users than drupal at the moment.
drupal ver. 7 is close to release though, and i wouldn't be surprised if
that caught up to wordpress re. ease of use, etc., at least to some
degree.

personally i'm partial to drupal though. for one i got used to 'the
drupal way' of doing things, and anything else would require a lot of
adjustment. secondly i think drupal is still better for non-standard
requirements. of course, you can hack any piece of open software to do
what you want in the end, but drupal's modular structure makes that a
lot easier.

the downside with drupal is that if your funtionality or design differs
even slightly from what a theme or module does, you need a solid basis
of PHP, CSS, HTML, javascript/jquery, and last not least "the drupal
way" of doing things to make your site do what you want, without turning
it into an un-maintainable total hack.

Can I add another technology choice into the mix:

http://www.silverstripe.org

SilverStripe is a PHP CMS similar to Drupal, but in my opinion much
easier to use and extend. However, it doesn't have nearly as many
modules available as WordPress or Drupal, so some critical feature you
might be looking might not be available. But as a developer, it is
really nice to work with.

(Disclaimer: I work at silverstripe.com)

lol. Interesting about the Silverstripe. (I'll have a look.)

I've also heard good stuff about the Magenta CMS.

Phani-ji, about being already used to the Drupal way of doing things -
me too. But I was blown away by how totally simple and intuitive WP is
now.

Download 3.0 and take it for a spin. You might be surprised. For a
quick and easy website solution it will be my first choice at the
moment.

Can anyone suggest any good resource for learning wordpress please?
I know there are tonnes of resources on the internet but I am looking for recommendations based on one's personal experience.
