Haribol,

I'm moving all of my web server operation into Amazon's EC2 cloud.

Here are the costings for EC2 vs Godaddy:

EC2

Specs:
1.7 GB RAM
1 EC2 Compute Unit
160 GB Hard disk

On-demand instance, up 24x365
$744.60/year
$62.05/month

Reserved instance, up 24x365:
$227.50 one-off + $262.80/year = $490.3/year
$40.86/month

Elastic IP (static IP address):
Free while machine is up (1c/hr while instance is down)

Bandwidth is 0.15c per GB
at average of 1GB/day add $5/month
at 300 GB/month the cost of the EC2 instance and the Godaddy machine will be equal

Godaddy:
Specs:
4GB RAM
60GB Hard disk
2000GB bandwidth included

$1080/year
$90/month

The Godaddy deal would be cheaper if I were consistently pushing gigs through, but I get massive spikes during streaming events like 24 hour kirtans, and less in-between, so elastic capacity suits better.

I am looking at using rPath to create the server appliance that I will use (probably CentOS, which is what I'm using on Godaddy atm), and then upload it to Amazon's Elastic Block Storage.

Currently I'm using S3 for all the persistent storage (such as archived mp3 on KirtanAustralia.com and all the mp3s/pdfs etc on Atma Yogi) and it is extremely cost-effective, and fast from anywhere in the world.

There is also a great iPhone app for managing S3 and EC2.

in service,
- Sitapati
