Bristol-Myers Squibb announces charitable donation of $1 million
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced donations totaling $1 million in 2013 to four nonprofit organizations that support patients with cancer. The donations will fund the development and availability of educational materials for patients and caregivers about the emerging field of cancer research and treatment called immuno-oncology.

Cancer vaccine could use immune system to fight tumors
Cincinnati Cancer Center (CCC) and UC Cancer Institute researchers have found that a vaccine, targeting tumors that produce a certain protein and receptor responsible for communication between cells and the body's immune system, could initiate the immune response to fight cancer. These findings, published in the Feb. 27 online edition of the journal Gene Therapy, build on previously reported research and could lead to new treatments for cancer.

Study identifies possible new target for future brain cancer drugs
A molecule in cells that shuts down the expression of genes might be a promising target for new drugs designed to treat the most frequent and lethal form of brain cancer, according to a new study by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James).

Novartis extends leadership in clinical trial data transparency
Novartis has announced additional steps to extend its leadership in clinical trial data transparency. Since 2005, and before requirements were in place, Novartis has been voluntarily disclosing summaries of Clinical Study Reports of its innovative medicines on its own website.

Psychological side-effects of anti-depressants worse than thought
A University of Liverpool researcher has shown that thoughts of suicide, sexual difficulties and emotional numbness as a result of anti-depressants may be more widespread than previously thought. In a survey of 1,829 people who had been prescribed anti-depressants, the researchers found large numbers of people - over half in some cases - reporting on psychological problems due to their medication, which has led to growing concerns about the scale of the problem of over-prescription of these drugs.

A new bioprinting method developed at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) creates intricately patterned 3D tissue constructs with multiple types of cells and tiny blood vessels. The work represents a major step toward a longstanding goal of tissue engineers: creating human tissue constructs realistic enough to test drug safety and effectiveness.
