Hello. We are coming to the end of stage one of our Chicago architecture map, but I have 2 issues that students are having trouble with:

1) not everyone can see the layers, even though they appear on the main map. For example, "Residential 1967-70" created by user "eileen" can only be seen on some maps, although she has "shared" it with the main map. How might everyone see that layer? Can I manage that from my end?

2) while most students can see the various layers, many of them cannot click on the box to highlight the features. The layer shows up as a lighter grey text. What needs to be done to make the layer and features usable for those students?

Thanks for your help anyone!

Hi Paul,
Which is the main map?  What are the permission settings on the layers?  Does everyone have permission to view all layers?
Best,
  Ben

Thanks, Ben. The main map is "Mayor Richard J. Daley and Cold War Architecture in Chicago" and I am set as the manager of that. The students should also have given me permission to view all layers. I have shared my map with everyone with permission to edit. I am not sure if I have given everyone permission to view all layers. Is that done by me, as manager, or individually in the layers?

I can go into each of their accounts, e.g., and see if the layer is attached to the Daley map. However, not all map layers show up in my master Daley map. I added Eileen's layer this morning but when I turned it on again it wasn't on the list.

Thanks for your help! Yours, Paul

Hi Paul,
Permission is controlled at the map and layer level.  You need to make all your maps and  layers viewable by anyone you want to have see them and so do your students.  To get to your Layer permissions you can go from your profile page and click the layer name or from your map where the layer is listed.  In the map, right click on the layer and select share layer.  At the bottom right of the layer page are permission settings. Let me know if this helps.
Best,
 - Ben

Thanks, Ben. Will give this a try in class on Tuesday. I have everyone on my layers and on the main map, but I don't think the students have all shared their layers. yours, paul

Hi Paul,
Do you know of others using WorldMap in their classes?  I'm putting together a list that I that I am thinking about posting on the WorldMap site.  Would you like your class in the list?
Ben

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, please do put our class on the list! I know of a few other folks now considering it after I have demoed what we are doing.

We just finished the first version for this class and I certified the map as well as changed the permissions to viewable by all. One final question, though: it doesn't appear that people who view the map can use the layers (they appear as ghostly grey on the left). As the manager, doesn't making the map viewable from my sign in make it usable by anyone? Thanks for your help.

And great program. Let me know if you ever need a testimonial!
yours, Paul

Hello.

I am new of the list. My name is Tom Mueller and I am a GIS / Geography professor at a small school just southeast of Pittsburgh, California University of Pennsylvania.  I will be using World Map in my Intro to Geography class in the Fall 2014 semester.

Thanks
Tom Mueller
