New Bulletins on Protecting Firefighters From Contaminated Gear

NIOSH recently published two companion bulletins on methods for reducing firefighters’ exposure to gear contaminated from the fireground. Contaminated gear can pose health risks to firefighters as some fireground contaminants have been linked to illness, including cancer. Through research and partnership, NIOSH evaluates exposure controls to protect firefighters on and off the job. The new bulletins are available now:

2026 NIOSH FFFIPP Reports

Three new NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) reports are available. Each report summarizes an FFFIPP investigation. The reports also include the conditions and circumstances leading to firefighter deaths and injuries, and recommendations to prevent similar events in the future:

New Health Hazard Evaluation Reports

The NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program recently published three reports on methods to control diesel exhaust exposure at fire stations:

50,000 Firefighters Strong and Counting

More than 50,000 firefighters have joined the NIOSH National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer, with over 165 fire departments reaching Gold Helmet status. Read more about the NFR and recent activities in the latest edition of NIOSH eNews.
