Federal Register Notice: Comment Today

Let your voice be heard! As the threat from structural, wildland, and wildland-urban interface fires grows, NIOSH seeks comments to help refine its research and engagement priorities. Share your comments on priority topics related to firefighter safety and health. Comments must be received on or before April 3, 2026.

New Fact Sheet Describes Program Updates

The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) conducts free, independent investigations of firefighter line-of-duty deaths and serious injuries. The program recommends ways to help avoid similar events. FFFIPP recently published an updated fact sheet with information about program goals and investigations.

New Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Case Report

NIOSH published a new case report on the Evaluation of Three Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Involved in a Near Miss While Operating at a Structure Fire. This report summarizes the inspection, evaluation methods, and findings for three self-contained breathing apparatus used by firefighters.

Over 40,000 Firefighters Strong and Growing

More than 40,000 firefighters nationwide have joined the National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer. With this level of participation, the NFR is now the largest firefighter cohort dedicated to understanding and preventing occupational cancer.

New Update to the NFR Data Dashboard

The NFR Data Dashboard now includes a new page featuring the most common cancer types reported by participants at enrollment. This update summarizes information on age at diagnosis, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and recommended screenings.

Over 100 NFR Gold Helmet Departments

More than 100 fire departments have been recognized as NFR Gold Helmet Departments. This designation means these departments have enrolled at least half of their active firefighters or more than 300 members in the NFR. Additionally, four departments have gone above and beyond, each with over 500 participants enrolled (Honolulu Fire Department, HI; Kansas City Fire Department, MO; Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, VA; Phoenix Fire Department, AZ).

2026 NIOSH Line-of-Duty Death Reports

New NIOSH Line-of-Duty Death Reports are now available. Each report summarizes an investigation by the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program. The reports also include the conditions and circumstances leading to firefighter deaths and injuries, and recommendations to prevent similar events in the future.
