New study found vaccinated children were much less likely to die from flu than unvaccinated children

New Data Supports Life-Saving Benefits of Flu Vaccination for Children

Everyone 6 months and older in the United States should get a yearly flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October. Some children need two doses of flu vaccine to be fully vaccinated. Flu vaccination is especially important for children who are at higher risk of serious flu complications. Children at higher risk include children younger than 5 years and children of any age with certain underlying health conditions.

Fast Facts
  • During most seasons, about 80% of children who are reported to have died from flu-related causes have not been fully vaccinated against flu.
  • A study published in 2017 looked at data from 2010 to 2014 found that flu vaccination reduced the risk of flu-related death in children in the United States.
  • A new follow-up study looked at case cohort data from 2016-2025 and found that flu vaccination was 80 percent effective in protecting children against flu-related death.
  • In this study, flu vaccine effectiveness in children with no known medical conditions was 87%; while it was 77% among children with underlying medical conditions, compared to children who were not vaccinated.
