Persistent strains of Campylobacter continue to cause extensively drug-resistant illnesses |
|---|
CDC, together with federal, state, and local partners, tracks and investigates reoccurring, emerging, or persisting (REP) strains of bacteria. A group of three persisting strains of Campylobacter bacteria (REPDBR01) continues to cause extensively drug-resistant gastrointestinal illnesses and outbreaks in the United States. CDC began investigating these strains in 2017, linking many REPDBR01 infections to puppies sold through pet stores and finding illnesses that occurred as early as 2007.

REPDBR01 infections may not be treatable with antibiotics commonly recommended for Campylobacter infection. Symptoms of Campylobacter infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. People with severe symptoms may require hospitalization. CDC periodically shares updated information on REP strains to promote collaboration, stimulate research, and ultimately support interventions to prevent illnesses caused by these strains.
