to World Outline
Hello all! As the subject says, after reading the news about a free
year of EC2, I figured I'd give this whole World Outline thing a
whirl. However, once I've got everything set up - I think - I'm unable
to log in, and thus unable to get to the roots page.

Here's the steps I followed. I'm sure I'm doing something that'll be
obvious to you folks, but I haven't even touched the OPML Editor (or
Frontier) in about 8 years.

On the server:
1. Followed the steps at EC2 for Poets to get an EC2 instance up and
running.
2. Installed the World Outline on the server from the Tool Catalog.
3. Set up my preferences on the server, including my Amazon secret key
(accepted), my editorial domain (which the preferences say does point
to the server), my S3 bucket (also good), and turned off page caching.
4. Created a user for myself in the OPML Editor using Tools > World
Outline > New User, and changed the password.

On the desktop:
1. Installed a virgin copy of the OPML Editor.
2. Opened the Preferences, and under the "World Outline server" prefs,
I put in the editorial domain that I assigned to the server as well as
the username and password I created for myself. Clicked Submit - got
the message "These are good settings."
3. Back in the OPML Editor, clicked Open Roots Page under the World
Outline submenu of the Outliner menu. My web browser opens, trying to
go to my roots page, only all I get is -

"500 Server Error

Can't access this page because you are not logged in."

So I tried visiting my editorial page directly in a browser, clicking
"Log In," and logging in using both my own credentials and those of
the admin account. Nothing seems to work - I'm returned to the front
page again, with no indication that I've been logged in at all and no
error message of any kind, and I can't seem to get to my roots page.

So - what did I screw up? :)

Thanks,
Phil

Hey Phil -- I'm going to try to repeat this process and see if I hit the same problem.

The software was easy to install before the last big corner-turn, and no doubt something is broken now.

It'll be good to smooth this out, and thanks for being the test case. :-)

Phil -- I repeated your steps, and hit the same problem. The fix was obvious.

Also, I apologize for the state of the docs. Lots of broken URLs. Glad to have them fixed.

Please let us know if you get through after updating.

Dave --

Getting closer. After updating on the server, I tried the login
process again on my desktop and was redirected to the login screen
instead of the server error screen. So far, so good.

However, logging in doesn't seem to be working - it doesn't seem to be
actually creating the cookie. On my desktop (using Chrome
15.0.874.121), I've only got one cookie for the editorial domain
(flMenuVisible). I've also tried using Firefox (3.6.18 on the EC2
server, and 9.0.1 on my desktop), and neither one seems to have a
login cookie.

Thanks,
Phil

Not sure what to do next, because this is not the behavior I saw.

You haven't yet said what the domains are, btw. Not sure if it makes much difference but the ones I am using are

cartwheel.reallysimple.org and cartwheel.worldoutline.org

The important thing is that I made sure they were different domains to try to factor out the possibility that it might work on my setup because I was using domains I had already used.

It's possible that my test isn't good because browser already somehow has cookies for those domains, but I used a fairly unused Mac to access the server, to reduce the possibility.

Anyway I'll think about other ways to look into this.

The editorial domain is wo.midboss.com. I also have
outline.midboss.com set up as a CNAME to the server, which looks like
it just accesses the web server on port 80.

If it makes any difference, I also have Radio2 running on the same
server at radio.midboss.com.

Well, let's as Dr Adam Curry to take a look at this. He's good at helping people get their worldoutline servers up. :-)

Well, I have absolutely no idea what I changed between now and three
hours ago (other than migrating a domain name to Route 53, something
I'd been meaning to do anyway) that would have caused my worldoutline
to work - but it works perfectly now! Now to start playing around with
it.

Apparently merely mentioning Adam's name whips the worldoutline server
into shaping up. :)

Thanks for the help, Dave!

I'm glad this 'fixed itself' as I'm still grappling with carribean
bandwidth for a couple more days :-)

Don't worry we're not done yet! :-)

There are more fixes to get, make sure to update worldOutline.root.
