On Ukraine, UK’s Boris Johnson To Urge Putin To “Avoid Bloodshed”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is scheduled to visit Russia in the coming days.
London:
Downing Street said on Friday that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, urging him to step back from escalating tensions over Ukraine.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said Johnson would “reiterate the need for Russia to step back and engage diplomatically when he speaks to President Putin this week”.
Downing Street said the British prime minister was “determined to accelerate diplomacy and intensify deterrence to avoid bloodshed in Europe”.
Johnson is due to visit the region in the coming days.
Relations between Russia and the West are at their lowest point since the Cold War after Moscow deployed tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine’s borders.
The British Foreign Office is expected to announce the tightening of the sanctions regime against Russia in Parliament on Monday, targeting strategic and financial interests.
It comes as a senior Conservative lawmaker warned on Friday that Russian dirty money pouring into London threatened national security.
“Money hidden in accounts and property is being used to undermine the security of the United Kingdom and the British people,” Tom Tugendhat, who chairs Parliament’s influential Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote in a newspaper.
Johnson warned this week that Russia faced Western sanctions “tougher than anything” seen before if it invaded Ukraine.
The prime minister said that Moscow risks provoking a protracted conflict that could be a “new Chechnya”.
Johnson took part in crisis talks with US President Joe Biden and other European leaders on Monday.
The United Nations Security Council, which includes the United Kingdom, will hold a plenary session on the Ukraine crisis on Monday.
