SUBJECT:  WHAT RYAN IS TEACHING IN THE UK

Been very busy the last few weeks and not had time to post what dances we have been doing! Attendances very good and all new dances going really well :-). Here is an update..

Last week we worked on one of two new dances by Dan McInerney - BLOWN AWAY. Not an easy teach, taking around 40 minutes, but definitely worth it and a great response from the class. Dan has picked an unusual track but one that really grows on you. And, as usual, the choreography is well-crafted to the music. As well as all of the other dances from the last 6 or 7 months we also danced NO NEED TO RUSH, THINK ABOUT IT, and a few others this week.

Two weeks ago we worked on two very different dances. Firstly, one of Neville's new dances NOT TONIGHT choreographed to a great Christina Aguilera track. Love how the music changes, and a straight-forward but directional dance to keep you thinking. We then worked on Debbie's new 112 count dance for JG2 BE BACK SOON. This has gone very well, although the dancers have to be open-minded on the first teach with the music. Sure to be a hit in America!

Other recent teaches are: Joey Warren's SMOKE & MIRRORS, Shaz's HOT OUT THE BOX, Neville's PUSH IT UP, and Joey's STOKED.

Dances played nearly every week (Usually 30 in total with oldies):

Each Tear    Don't Kill The DJ    American Honey    Running In The Wrong Direction    Night Owl    Oh Ruby    Who U Love    Hypnotized    Faith & Desire    Baby Baby Baby    Murder My Heart    Gave It All Away    If We Ever Meet Again    Get On Down    What U Wanna Do?    Broken Heels    No Salvation    Stupid In Love    Americano    Tic Tok Drop    Holdin' It Down    Love Ya    I Gotta Feeling    NY Cha    What About    Sentimental    Time To Play    U Got It All    Shootin' Star    Sexy Chick    Playing With Fire    Must Get Free    ETC.

All for now,

Subject:LINEDANCE WORKSHOP WITH SCOTT BLEVINS AT THE ELKS CLUB OF PT.PLEASANT BEACH, N.J.-A REVIEW
FROM:MIKE COHEN (
mike...@comcast.net)

Hello Dancers,

Over this past weekend,  "The Jersey Girls" & The Elks Club of Pt. Pleasant Beach hosted our first Dance Workshop.  Our special guest was the one & only Scott Blevins.  The 51 attendees had a great time, to say the least. Some have even asked what we'll be doing for next year.  You have to plan well in advance for these events, as I've come to appreciate.  It took over a year just to firm up the date with Scott.  Why? Take a look at his schedule at scottblevins.com.  Well the date arrived and we were not disappointed.  Scott's dances are always interesting & challenging.  It makes all the difference having him at a local event, such as this, where you can repeat things over & over again, rather than an event where he has 45 minutes to teach it.

Scott taught 3 dances. Two were brand new & will be premiered in just a few days at the JG Marathon.  Stepsheets will be finalized & available about a week or so after JG. DVD's of these dances will also be available from his website in a week. For the most accurate stepsheets check scottblevins.com.

First up was "Murder Machine"-a phrased AB dance choreographed to the song "Teenagers" by the group My Chemical Romance and downloadable from i-tunes.

Scott preferred to teach this dance to the words rather than counts although he certainly counted the dance out for us.  Indeed Scott would prefer to do dances in this way but realizes that not all songs allow this approach.  Dancing this dance to the words certainly worked, in this case,  The group did just great with it.  Since this was a first teach ever, Scott kept reminding everyone to relax & just get the idea of the dance & the steps & not be hard on themselves.  Great advice!  If you're a fan of Scott's you'll be learning this one for sure.  If you shy away from his dances try this one, by all means.

Next came a beautiful NC 2 called "Trouble Is".  The song is the same as the dance & is sung by 16 year old Allison Iraheta of "American Idol" fame. It is 48 counts with 2 restarts.  Again great results on everyone's part.

Finally, Scott went back to a dance classic of his from 2003 called "Cold Blooded" which is danced to the song "Sophisticated Lady" by Mya..  Scott remarked on how hard this dance was in 2003 and how far we've come in the intervening years, as dancers.  It certainly was not hard at all.

Scott reviewed these dances later in the evening & had the group dance the dances one after the other with no walk through still later on.  They did great!

Thanks Scott for a memorable dance evening that I know we all had.  By the way, Scott constantly mentioned & demonstrated dance techniques to help us dance the dances better. Most interesting!  Of course we danced to many of Scott's classic dances and current one's such as Have Fun, Go Mad, Shiver 'n Shake, Feel, Coochie Bang Bang, Break Free Cha, Hey Mama, No Salvation, I Scream, Together Forever, Cha Cha Tonight (done to the song "Bust Your Window" by Jazmine Sullivan), as well as Hell If I which, although not Scott's dance, he has been teaching at events.

Of course no evening can be this successful without the hard work of "The Jersey Girls" & "The Elks". Kudos to Nancy Devito & those who prepared a great meal for all & "The Jersey Girls" for all the meetings & phone calls necessary to plan this.  It's doubly satisfying when your first workshop event comes off so well.  NOW WHAT!! Scott's own comments that he had such a great time are very much appreciated, by the way.

Lastly thanks to all who attended & who had such great comments. We had people from N.Y. Conn. Mass. Arizona as well as of course, N.J. Thanks to Debi Pancoast who helped Scott prepare at least preliminary versions of the 2 new dances.  We'll look forward to the final version so that we may download them & review them.  Finally, as DJ, I hope everyone got their requests played. Quite a list!

If we do another event such as this, I hope you'll be there for that one too.

Happy Dancing,

Mike Cohen

Subject:  Differences in Partner and Couple Dancing
From:  Debra Cleckler - NTA VP and Dance Committee
de...@cleckler.com

Occasionally I get asked to explain the differences between couple dancing and partner dancing.

Couple dancing is basically lead and follow dancing where a leader leads the follower to do a series of various amalgamations (steps/movements) as a couple.  This lead-follow dancing is done in dance styles like Two Step, Cha Cha, Swing, Waltz, Polka, Nightclub, Triple Two, Mambo/Salsa, Samba, Hustle, Fox Trot, Rumba, Tango, etc. and there are no set steps to follow as long as you stay within the basic dance style.  The leader is free to lead whatever moves he pleases (hoping that the follower will respond appropriately to the leads).  There is no "set" song required....just let the music style drive the dance style.
Partner dancing (aka Patterned Partner Flow Dancing) is like a line dance that usually travels around the room in a counter clockwise circle.  Everyone is doing the same (pre-determined) defined choreography at the same time.  These dances can be done in a contained circle in the center of the dance floor or they can flow around the room.  Some are mixer dancers where the partnerships change throughout the dance.  Samples of established and common Partner dances include (but not limited to) Cotton Eyed Joe, Schottische, The Barn Dance, Longbranch Hustle, etc. and like line dance there is usually a set song to do these partner dances to.

Please consider joining Michael Barr and Michele Burton for a Friday afternoon seminar.  Give your corns, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendons a rest and join us from 3 – 5 pm.  You'll take part in assessing the line dance diagnosis and cure of the three topics on this year's surgery board:  CHOREOGRAPHY, CURRICULUM, and line dance PLASTIC SURGERY.  It’s not about the technical terms, like Pas de Bourre or Fibrinopeptides, it’s about the human side of what it's like to teach in the trenches, make dancing easy for the students, and taking the mystery out of music and choreography.

SEE YA AT THE MARATHON - remember your masks and surgical gloves.

Subject:  South African Masters 2010 Review

The South African Masters headed its preparations with a good start when Sam
arrived 4 days before the event for a little sightseeing. As Wednesday came
around it became apparent that our Head Judge, Nicola Lafferty, might not be
getting to the event due to that horrible Icelandic volcano so Sam and Event
Director Nadia began putting together the contingencies.

Thankfully Nicola managed to get on a flight on Thursday (after getting a
free upgrade to Business Class!) and arrived in sufficient time to make the
event work as if nothing had happened. Thankfully Nicola still managed to
get a full suitcase of costume donations out South Africa. Thank you to
everyone who has donated to the cause - everything has been put to great
use.

As Friday came along it was time for the first Judging Examinations using
the new World Dance Masters Judging criteria. We are very excited to say
that South Africa now holds the first ever Level I and Level II World Dance
Masters qualified judges. Congratulations to everyone who took them and
passed.

The Friday evening social started nice and early at around 6pm with over 100
dancers clearly enjoying the opportunity to dance away to all types of
dances. When we say this event caters for every type of dancer it truly
does; from absolute beginners to more advanced dancers. We knew from this
point the South African Masters was going to be an event that was wonderful
to behold.

Nadia Coen and her team went to the hall bright and early on Saturday
morning to start with set-up and open registration. Nicola, Sam and Caryl
Cusins arrived at around 10:00 to start their preparations for the days
judging assignments. The competition started with the events ‘Classic’
divisions (social divisions). What a wonderful experience this was. Over 35
children attended from Broadlands Primary School, a school situated close to
the venue, and a dance school in Bela Bela (Limpopo province situated about
250km from the venue), and all danced in their relative age divisions.
Learning their dances in between their breaks at school just three weeks
prior to the event, the kids were aged between 5 and 13 and all did an
amazing job!

At around 12:00 we did the award ceremony for the Classic Youth division so
they could go home if they wanted to. Its safe to say that all the dancers
were happy with their certificates and awards and we hope to see them back
next year!

At 13:00 we started with the rest of the ‘Classic’ and ran straight into the
‘International’ divisions (standard Masters divisions). The standard of
competition was wonderful to watch and amazing for a country that doesn’t
have access to the best professional tuition like the UK does. Nicola, Sam
and Caryl all had their work cut out for them as the dancers showed such an
amazing ability. At 18:30 the awards commenced and all the new South African
Masters Champions were crowned.

After the awards Nicola and Sam did three well-received demonstrations and
after this was completed the breakdown started and everyone began to make
their way home.

With the competition complete and all our dancers satisfied, Sunday started
with a day of intense technical workshops held by Nicola and Sam. The
opportunities for new technical information to be absorbed by the South
African dancers are few and far between so they make the most of the time
they have with the visiting Judges. After another fantastic day the event
was officially over but the fun had only just begun for Nicola & Sam.
On Tuesday they were both treated to 24 hours of South African culture.
Starting off at the Monkey Sanctuary, Nicola, Sam and Nadia were treated to
a tour of the area by Sarah the Spider Monkey. Being so up-close to these
wonderful animals was an experience Nicola & Sam will never forget. But it
wasn’t over yet. Next a trip to the Elephant Sanctuary. Another incredible
experience. Riding the elephants and even being kissed by them (an utterly
disgusting but strangely gratifying experience), the day ended watching the
sunset over the mountains from the sanctuary’s sunset point.

On Wednesday they were treated to (or terrified by, in Sam’s case) a Canopy
Slide across the mountains. Drifting 140m on a zip-wire across to
mountainous caverns 300ft above the ground is something that everyone should
do if they get chance.

After a truly amazing experience, Nicola & Sam boarded their flight back to
the UK on Wednesday evening and proceeded to get back to reality.

For anyone wanting to experience any World Dance Masters International
events who have some spare money and want a holiday at the same time, the
South African Masters will give you a lifetime of memories (while getting
you one of your qualifying points for Worlds). Check the new website
(launching 14th June) for details on next years event, we will make sure
that anyone serious in attending gets all the help they need in booking all
the activities available to them.
