Subject: Reply To Eddie
Driskill/Best Kept Secret
From: Bob Grundy
I
like they way you think. Getting "press releases" and wanting the media to get
involved with helping us get the message out about what we in line dance love to
do. But I think there are a lot of complications we all face. Some important
ones were brought out by Taylormaid in Fridays Newslwetter. One of my biggests
problems is watching dance venues struggle because the "regulars" have a hard
time sharing the floor with beginners. I know that each time a new dancer tries
out a different venue it is so intimidating. At one time most dancers were so
welcoming to everyone. We need to get back that attitude.
In the
New England area I know this for sure. Round/Square dancing is all but gone.
Ballroom is on the decline and places to dance are harder and harder to find.
Rents for the use of halls is usually the biggest struggle for all the dancers,
swing, line ballroom, etc:
One thing that I keep thinking about is
how do we get our message out. Most businesses have budgets for advertising. The
problem here was pointed out by Taylormaid. If you advertise on Country media,
that audience is looking for "Country". Now to find another "media" for non
Country that would reach the masses we are looking for to join us. I don't think
there are many people who pick up their local newspapers to find a line dance
class. We (local intructors) all rely strongly on one another to keep our
event/venues going because we have no other way to get "our" message out to the
public. The "pie" keeps getting smaller and smaller. We need to look at ways to
help one another
My thoughts (including press releases) would be to
get as many instructors/dj's to pool our resourses. I am sure not any one of us
has the kind of money we all know it would take to keep what we love to do in
the headlines. But if we could do a "regional or national" add campaign with all
the instructors in the line dance area getting on board to share in this kind of
venture there could be positive results. Get together and brainstorm ways to get
new dancers on board and to keep from losing the ones we have. Sharing the cost
as well as the rewards for everyone. Use every avenue to show the non-dancer
what they are missing. Use this newsletter as a "point of light" on how to get
it to work for everyone. We all share so much info because of Carol Craven, Bill
Hollick and the many others working to keep us all up to date. But it takes
time/money.
Looking for more info?...I
am...

SUBJECT:
RIGHT FOOT VERSUS LEFT FOOT
About the abovesubject / topic, in ballroom dancing the man
starts with his left
foot and his partner (the woman usually) starts with
her right foot. True of
almost all partner dances. This is
undoubtedly why many men choreographers
begin the dance with left foot.
It is not a matter of "lefties" or "righties" it;'s
a matter of not wanting
to step on your partner;s feet in ballroom dancing and
the men are just used
to starting with leff foot.
Have done a lot of
ballroom
dancing.

FEEDBACK ON DANCES TAUGHT LAST MONTH
Some feedback on the dances I've taught November/December
Time To Play (Peter & Alison)
Big Ali (Hit The Floor)
32/4 Intermediate
Music 8 Dance 8
Classic funky track & a cool dance – 3 walls with an attitude tag that
skips you to the front wall every 3rd wall – Cool or what !! J – Uses the track
really well & feel good dancing for sure (If you like funky/pop tracks) –
Neat Stomp/Hold/Toaster beginning – Easy funky/pop fun.
B.C.O. (Rachael McEnaney)
Chris Anderson (Baby Come On)
48/4 Intermediate
Music 9 Dance 9
Chill Factor style music & dance – Another feed good fun one – A big
hit with all the classes this one – More on the easy side of Intermediate, so a
dance for everyone – Wild Heel Jack/Heel Switch sequence & a fun
V-step/OutOut-InIn ending – I thought the music might be a bit close to Chill
Factor (In fact I have used it as an alternative in the past) but not so – A Top
10 dance on the way I’d say.
Hands Up (Craig Bennett)
Whitney Houston (For The Lovers)
32/4 Intermediate
Music 9 Dance 8
An easy cool dance from Craig – Just one to enjoy the music & have fun
– Everyone enjoying it – Including ‘Hands Up’ when the music prompts you J ……… A
really cool full turn move into a rock turn which works really well – And
everyone enjoys the hip bumps too – In a style of your own !! J
3-D (Maurice Rowe)
Massari (Bag Girl)
32/4 Improver
Music 9 Dance 8
A great little dance for the funky beginners – Nice opening Side-Touch
sequence which you can funk up as much as you fancy (Or not) – Then great
practice too with Lock Steps/Chase Turns/Mambo Steps/Coaster Steps – And cool
Wizard Steps at the end too – Great dance – One that the Intermediates will join
in too.
Foolish Wishing (Vikki Morris)
Toby Keith (He Ain’t Worth Missing)
32/4 Improver
Music 8 Dance 8
Classic & slow/easy traditional/country cha cha – Ideal for the
Improvers.
Senorita (Craig Bennett)
Alex Swings (Senorita)
32/2 Improver
Music 9 Dance 8
A nice up-beat catchy Latin beat – And a nice easy dance ideal for
Improvers but one all the Intermediates are equally enjoying too – Flows really
well – And a cool Stomp/Paddle sequence finish – Come & learn it from me at
Worlds in my ‘Lobby’ teach !! J
Hop It (Robbie M. Hickie)
Chely Wright (Go On And On)
32/4 Beginner/Improver
Music 8 Dance 8
Another nice easy/classic/catchy country cha cha from Robbie – Just
like Louisianna & Cool Chick but a touch easier.
Baby Dream (Teresa & Vera)
Michael Buble (All I Do Is Dream Of You)
32/4 Improver
Music 8 Dance 8
Lots of Buble fans out there !! J – This one is a really nice Improver one
from T&V – Classic steps plus a neat Kick-Ball/Stomp/Hold sequence –
Beginners really enjoyed it & a nice track to dance too for sure – Check out
T&V’s Intermediate dance to the same track (See later).
Heal This Heartbreak (Dee Musk)
JLS (Heal This Heartbreak)
64/4 Intermediate
Music 8 Dance 8
A cool mainstream/pop dance follow-up to Release Me from Dee – Rolls
along great with the track – Neat Heel/Hold sequence in the middle – Really
popular.
Sentimental (Rachael McEnaney)
Garath Gates (Sentimental)
48/2 Higher Intermediate
Music 9 Dance 9
Catchy West Coast track – A dance along the lines of Miss California –
Great moves & some tricky syncopation which hit the beat spot on – Newline
gang really enjoying this one – Neat toe-tap section – And the ‘funky turn’
sequence works really well – Great dance from Rachael.
Rain Against My Window (Michael Barr)
Seal (I Can’t Stand The Rain)
32/4 Intermediate
Music 9 Dance 8
Some great steps in this one – A huge hit in the States where West Coast
rules – And the class really enjoying it – Easy but cool to a great track –
Really neat Kick-Ball-Kicks sequence.
Back It Up (Francien Sittrop)
Caro Emerald (Back It Up)
Phrased
Music 9 Dance 9
A great dance from Francien – A beaty pop track – Phrased with two cool
& different parts – Intermediate but easy enough – ABB all the way – Two
dances in one & a great use of the track – Classes love it.
Happy Hour (Shaz Walton)
Cheryl Cole (Happy Hour)
64/2 Intermediate
Music 10 Dance 10
Great beaty cha cha track & a cool/smooth middle of the road dance from
Shaz that hopefully everyone will enjoy – Our class certainly did & I just
love it – Awesome track & a cool dance – I’m looking forward to teaching
this one at Worlds in my workshop.
NY Cha (Neville & Julie)
Paloma Faith (New York)
64/2 Intermediate/Advanced
Music 10 Dance 10
Very much like Happy Hour – Another really neat cha cha – A mix of new
& classic sequences that really work well with the track – Neat double
sailor ½ sequence – I also like the turn/sit sequence into a lock step – And as
simple as it is, the ‘Ribbon of Highway’ section works really well to ease
things down – Great dance.
Ay Amor (Ria Vos)
Semino Rossi (Ay Amor)
44/4 Easy Intermediate
Music 8 Dance 8
Catch up time with a Top 10 dance – Did this dance with Ria back in
June in Holland – Loved it & Dee who was with me brought it back to teach at
our Newcastle event & it has just been remiss of me that I’ve not done it at
my own classes – A cool cha cha that was well received – Love the ‘drag’ moves,
the turning Lock Step & a really neat Sycopated Rock/Monterey/Cross-Shuffle
finish sequence – Should have done it months ago !! J
Dream Of You (Teresa & Vera)
Michael Buble (All I Do Is Dream Of You)
64/2 Easy Intermediate
Music 8 Dance 8
Baby Dream a hit with the Improvers – And this one a nice easy one for
the Intermediate class, especially for the many Michael Buble fans – Cool
syncopated rock/back-shuffle start – And it just flows along nice & easy
with the track – Class really enjoyed it.
Little Red Corvette (Rachael McEnaney)
Mike Zito (Little Red Corvette)
48/2 Higher Intermediate
Music 9 Dance 9
Not that difficult really – More Intermediate I’d say – But a classic
& cool Rachael dance, much like Sentimental that we are also currently
enjoying – It went well with both classes – The last teach of the year for me –
A really smooth/slow version of this track – An 8&1 cha cha with a West
Coast feel.

SUBJECT: NOTE
ABOUT WHAT GRAHAM AND KATHY ARE TEACHING
FROM: LAURA
K.
I just wanted to thank Graham and Kathy for their nice comments on my
dance, and for teaching it. I know there were a few choices, but believe
it or not, there really weren't when I started choreographig it. I have
some other dances, but we mainly just do them locally as I haven't really really
been out promoting them at all. That's why I'm surprised that you've even
heard of my dance for Bad Romance. You can find some of my other dances on
youtube by searching kicksnstomps.
Who I am and where I'm from? Well,
I've been kicking around the line dance scene for about 15 years, but I only
started teaching and choreographing about a year and a half ago. I was
also on a line dance team called QuickSilver a few years ago. I'm from
Oshawa, which is just outside Toronto, in Ontario, Canada.
I read this
newsletter faithfully every day, and I can't tell you how much I hope to someday
make it to some of the different classes that I see posted on here. When I
do make it, I'll be sure to look you up.
Thanks agian.
