Monday 11/12. I sent the newsletter before I left on Sunday but
it got returned so you'll have lots to read today.
Just wanted to take a minute to echo the words of others who attended the
Tampa Bay Line Dance event and say what a great time we had! Jen and Jason
have the whole event thing down to a science and as far as anyone can tell,
everything went off perfectly. And what a joy to see Arline again, back on
her feet, actually teaching dances and looking better than she has any right to
do, given what she has been through in the last few months. She is surely
a trooper and it was a pleasure to watch her work the crowd the way she always
has. Welcome back, Arline!
I was honored to be a part of this
and had such a great time teaching Niels Poulsen's magnificent NC2, HEAVY ON MY
HEART as well as Ria Vos' hot new pop one, SOUL FIRE! If you haven't seen
these dances, I hope you will take a look! Thanks to all of you who
managed to drag yourselves out of bed at 9am on both days to join me! I
really appreciate you!
As anyone who reads Carol's newsletter
knows, Simon Ward not only stole the show, but almost the entire weekend at
Tampa. The crazy blonde "Hairspray" video from Saturday night may become
the classic event video of all time! The man is out of his head most of
the time, but has got to be one of the most fun people I know. We are so
excited that he will be joining his pals Joey Warren and Craig Bennett (other
fun guys who are also out of their heads) on March 7-10, 2013 for the EXPERIENCE
2013 in Orlando, FL. As if that weren't enough, we also have Ria Vos (who
is just on fire right now with her dances!), Guyton Mundy, Shaz Walton, Dan
McInerney and we are keeping our fingers crossed for Debbie McWotzit and the
little "Sheila bump". We are hopeful this may be her little baby debut,
but no promises just yet!
BY THE WAY: If you picked up a
flyer for the EXPERIENCE 2013 at Tampa, please check to see that you have the
correct one. We discovered that there were a handful of the old flyers
with the wrong date mixed in. The correct dates are March 7 through 10,
2013 and our headliners are the people I mentioned above. If you have one
that is not this date or not these people, throw it away and write me for a new
one!!
AND FINALLY: Thanks to all of you who have written me
to tell me that my website is not working correctly. I am so acutely aware
of this and not very happy about it either. I appreciate hearing from so
many of you that you look at the site often to see what we are doing and I hope
to get myself back on track again very soon. Thanks for your patience in
the meantime!!
More Later,
Sandy

Intermediate classes
Advanced class

SUBJECT: DANCE REVIEWS
FROM:
JANIS
64 count, 4 wall improver dance – 3 restarts
Music: Simply Beautiful by The Lennerockers
At last I have found an alternative to that fab little dance MY NEW LIFE,
this one also by the same group. The restarts are all in the same place,
after the Monterey turns, although the second one does not turn. Is it
called a Monterey if it does not turn, I ask myself. Face the front, lets
do that bit again, no lets go from the back, no changed my mind. How to
annoy your class, naughty me. I do like dancing this one and it will make
a nice change so hope the bands pick it up.
THE BELLE OF LIVERPOOL – Audrey Watson
64 count, 2 wall easy intermediate dance – tag free
Music: The Belle of Liverpool by Derek Ryan
Oooh Audrey, what a wee cracker of a dance! Fairly bobs along quite
happily, nippier than you expect and I think we are really going to enjoy this
one. The sort of music that makes you want to jig about, so sod the dance
and just jig. Gets your feet tapping as soon as the first notes penetrate
your delicate little ear drums. To be sure it does.
MEXICOMA – Robbie McGowan Hickie
64 count, 2 wall intermediate line dance – tag on the pop alternative but
not on the country track which I just love! Actually think I prefer the
pop version on this one.
Music: Mexicoma (aka The Daffodil Dance 2013) by Bucky
Covington
Or Your Captain Tonight (Radio Edit, I might add) by Elena
There is also an Improver dance called BLANKETY BLANK to the same 2 tracks
with another 6 doz alternatives to choose from.
Maybe to take in a dancer’s preference we should hold a SILENT DISCO, give
everyone some headphones as they arrive, and they can all tune in to their own
choice of music, the DJ can put his feet up, and provided everyone starts at the
same time, it could work, do you think? Would make a wonderful
video……….
Just when I was thinking he had moved to Planet Zog, up pop some fabulous
dances as we have come to expect from Mr H. Just like a double decker bus,
they come in sixes! He is soooooo meanie keeping them from us, not that I
would say lol.
LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME – Frank Trace
64 count, 2 wall easy intermediate dance – tag free (music to my
ears)
Music: Love Me Or Leave Me by Rod Stewart
Don’t like Rod Stewart but I do like this, must be mellowing in his senior
years. Dance flows along really well and it is most enjoyable.
Stroll to finish – I think everyone would like to just stroll rather than start
again.
HELELE – Peter & Alison
64 count, 2 wall intermediate dance, 2 tags and 2 restarts
Music: Helelelelelelelelelelele by Helele
Love the music and the Zulu feel to it (what do I know about that?!) but
the drum section is sooooo good to dance to. Some of the footwork a bit
fiddly to start with but once done a few times works well to the music.
The restarts are obvious but you need to practice it a bit.
WINNERS & LOSES – Diana Dawson
64 count, 4 wall Improver dance – tag free
Music: The Losing Side of Me by The Mavericks
Adore The Mavericks so had to teach this one (and sing, ssshhhhh!)
I call this one the hitch and paddle dance, very enjoyable.
IMELDA’s WAY – Adrian Churn
32 count, 4 wall Beginner/Improver – tag free
Great track and the dance fits really well that it is a pleasure to dance
it. Some will do the hand on head bit at the end and some won’t but it
does go well. Have even been known to do a sneaky one when they are all
facing the back!
ALL MY PEOPLE – Maggie Gallagher
64 count, 4 wall intermediate dance – 1 restart (actually I think you need
an “&” step here to restart - tut tut Maggie!) + one 12 count tag
Music: All My People (Radio Edit) by Sasha Lopez
It’s like picking the petals off a daisy chain – No, I won’t teach it, yes,
I will teach it, no, I won’t…….. Yes I will! Love the music
although it is quicker than you think with a funky feel to it. What put me
off was the first steps with a heel tap across which I found hard to do but
practice and a token heel across (think I would prefer a touch!) made the
difference and I really enjoyed it.
WOM BOM BOM – Craig Bennett & Paul Tarmac
64 count, 2 wall fun intermediate dance
Music: Wom Bom Bom by Sam And The Womp
Hooray for demos on line and it is great to see the choreographers dancing
their own dance. Not that we can do it like these two but we had fun
learning it. Taught also on our holiday in Spain, Charlotte Macari made it
even more fun. Her body roll is a sit, bum, chest which sort of works or
you can just shrug or do your own interpretation of a move which is great if you
are 18 but at our age, whatever next! Now is it cross, side cross or side,
cross, side or…. then a power walk then more body rolls. Love it. If
you remember STOP IT then the start will be easy (think that must have Paul’s
input!)
SKIFFLE TIME – Darren Bailey
64 count, 4 wall intermediate dance – no restarts thank goodness.
Music: Skiffle Time by The Jive Aces
Fast, fun and furious and your exercise for the day. Just loved
watching Darren dance it on line as he puts his own interpretation on the
dance. I’ll slow it down to start with I said but it still went at 90
mph. The steps are easy enough but that quick weave is a killer but so
much fun or you can just have a paddy on the spot. Really enjoying it and
after teaching it at most of my classes, it is getting easier so a good workout
to boot. What’s next please Darren?!
BOYS WILL BE BOYS – Rachael McEnaney
64 count, 2 wall intermediate dance – tag free
Music: Boys Will Be Boys by Paulina Rubio
Quicker than you think and choreography hits the spot. Like the
repeat synchopation.
SHAME ON ME – Rachael MeEnaney
64 count, 2 wall easy intermediate – tag free
Music: Shame On Me by Ken Mellons
A bit quicker than you would expect but the dance is really good, love the
kicks. Mr M sounds a bit like old Dwighty.
WHERE THE WIND BLOWS – Peter & Alison
102 count (yep!) 1 wall intermediate dance – 2 restarts near the end
Music: Where The Wind Blows by Zac Brown Band
I did not divulge how many steps as if you go over 64, negativity on the
dance starts before you begin. Teaching this one as Alan Gregory has added
it to his play list although I am sure he has a Plan B up his talented
sleeve! Fairly fast so no time to think what comes next and although some
of the steps are repetitive they are not in the same direction so you need a
good memory or someone you can follow with it. I really enjoyed it but can
see a few walk throughs on the horizon.
WHO ELSE BUT YOU – Ria Vos
40 count, 4 wall intermediate rumba – 1 restart
Music: Quien Como Tu by Tamra
Nice little rumba to start a class off with to warm up. Taught
recently in Spain by Charlotte Macari, teaching it in Portsmouth does not have
the same ambience as a venue overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. I close my
eyes and I am transported to the sunshine and the memories of a lovely
holiday. Oh well, always got next year to look forward to.
WHEN I NEED YOU – Karl Harry-Winson
40 count, 4 wall waltz – tag free
Music: When I Need You by Joe McElderry
We all know and love and can sing this music and it’s a nice easy dance
that I am now teaching in my classes. Love it. Was somewhat marred
by the following phrases: Man Overboard, Captain’s Coming, Titanic,
Submarines. Someone in distress out at sea?! Noooooooooo, Robert’s
rendition of his latest Kingshill weekend where everyone responded to these
phrases by either saluting, falling on the floor, swimming or pretending to be a
submarine. Funny yes, did I join in………No! I’m sooo boring!
Mind you, try dancing to a lovely waltz and someone shouts Submarines and people
fall to the floor and pretend to be one. Phooey! Are we adults
or children?
PLEASE REMEMBER ME – Peter & Alison
24 count, 4 wall improver NC2 – 3 tags
Music: Please Remember Me by Scotty McCreedy
Love the track but I have a mental block regarding the tag. You never
dance the 4th wall as it is replaced by a tag! First time I taught it, it
kept ending up as a one wall dance and I could not think how it could be until
someone told me the tag was on the 4th wall, not the 1st! What a
plonker and there I was blaming the choreographers for issuing a duff step
sheet! Once sorted, delightful little dance and only 24 counts.
THROUGH THE FIRE – Scott Blevins & Jo Thompson Symanski
32 count, 4 wall intermediate dance – no tags, restarts, bridges, funnels
(hmmmm is Scott feeling OK?!) And there is a step sheet (with
headings). Double hmmmmmm! Something is afoot!
Music: Through The Fire by Lina
Yeayyyyyyyyy, I can do a Scott dance and enjoy it! Love the quirky
music and how the choreography hits every beat. Nice one.
CAN’T SHAKE YOU – Peter and Alison
64 count, 2 wall intermediate dance
Music: Can’t Shake You by Gloriana
Quicker than you think and you have to listen to the music to get it to fit
but I did enjoy this one. Gloriana sounds like a pop singer rather
than a country band so I was sure surprised. Nice surprised rather than
not nice surprised, I would add. I do love country music but line
dancing just has this image and you are not going to get rid of it. Line
dance = country music = yeehaa = boots and braces = Line dance! Someone
from work has just returned from Nashville. You would have loved it they
said, all the shops with all the boots in them, country singers, couldn’t tell
you their names but they were great and we loved it. When did I say that I
dance only to country music with boots on?! You mean you don’t – look of
shock, horror!
Tks
Janis

JANIS GRAVES danc...@hotmail.com
We had our last meeting for this year on Saturday at the Beardall

taught were Beer Money (Kathy Brackett), Wasn't That A Party (Larry Bass),
Zaleilah (Ria Vos), I Wanna (Gerard Murphy, Michael Barr & Frank Trace),

(Tina Summerfield), Don't Stay (Lisa McCammon & Brenda Shatto), My 1st Waltz

and brains and visited with one another. Then we tried Beautiful Surprise
(Junior Willis & Scott Schrank), Jump! (Craig Bennett), Kiss Tomorrow
Goodbye (Kathy Brackett), It's The Weekend (Lynn Luccisano & John Huffman)
and How You Gonna (Will Craig). Meetings for next year are not yet
