SUBJECT: 1ST AND 3RD TUESDAY CLASS IN
LARGO, FLA
Last night was
that extra Tuesday, which means no class, but NEXT Tuesday (April 7) we start
back up with reviews as requested or needed and teaches of dances already
promised plus new ones we'll be bringing back from
Boston!
Any input on what you would like
or changes that can be made are ALWAYS welcome!
We are
fortunate enough to be able to make those changes in our
class!
Let us not forget that this class is ours and we can
pick and choose any dance we want and go over it twenty times if needed! Where
else can you do that!??
I'll be sending
out the past Tuesday note so you can see again what we've done lately and the
ones we didn't get to yet!
The Big News
is that we are fast approaching our 1 yr anniversay which is May 5th!
:o) That doesn't seem possible and I can't tell you enough how Thankful
Carol and I are to have been involved in this great class. The
dances done at our first class were Bam A Lam (which is still requested to be
retaught and done in our class and I will do that for you Jillian and anyone
else that wants it!), Irish Spirit, Dance Like You're The Only One, and
Phenomenon!
I have one problem with that and it is that May 5th
is my precious granddaughter Vanessa's 7th Birthday and I will have to move the
class to either the Tuesday before or the Tuesday after! We'll leave it open for
discussion and we can all decide! We need a party of course and I think we
should definetly do all those dances that night!
We'll talk
about it at our next class!
Again Thank
You All for making our class so great! We do hope we'll see the young and busy
dance friends back as they complete their semester of school plus our other
friends that have become busier in their lives. It would be nice to have
everyone there for our Anniversary Party so hope you all can make room in your
busy schedule! We'll let everyone know when it is when we pick the
date!
See you Tuesday, APRIL 7! 630 to 730
reviews, hard teaches or just dancing! 730 lessons
start!
Thanks Again Everyone!
Diane
NOTE FROM ME: And I
want to thank Diane for getting everything organized each week and all the
people who keep this class going. We're not big in size but we certainly
are big in enthusiasm and everyone pitches in to teach and help in whatever way
they can. We couldn't do it without it being a group project and we have
all become better friends in the process. I would love to see some new
faces join us soon. Even if you don't know all the dances we are doing the
first week, we are adding new ones all the time and you'll be caught up in no
time and we try to make sure we play dances that EVERYONE knows so you will be
up and dancing and not just sitting. Can't wait to see what the hits from
Boston are so we can get started on those!!

SUBJECT: SOUTHPORT
REVIEW
FROM: RYAN
Had a great time at Maggie's
annual event in Southport last weekend with a great crowd of 350+ dancers. A
great atmosphere from start to finish and a good mix of dances too - a mix of
mainstream floorfillers, popular funky hits, and some oldies here and there. It
was a hard job for the DJ's Dave and Andrew but they did a good job catering for
the crowd. The fancy dress themes were well supported too with many in their
horror/space wear for the Twilight Zone on Saturday Night and many in their Red,
White & Blue on the Sunday.
Maggie taught 5 of her new dances
over the weekend. Firstly Life Without U which was a quick spot teach on the
Friday night. Saturday started with a quick run through of her easy improver
dance T'morrow Never Knows. Then on with Issues, J Ho and Breathe Slow which all
filled the floor throughout the workshops and social dancing in the evenings
too. We did J Ho and Breathe Slow at class this week and have already taught
Issues and all 3 are popular. John Robinson was great entertainment over the
weekend. His routine with Craig was great fun and his teaching was enthusiastic
and enjoyable just to watch. The three dances he taught were Stereo Nights (2
years old), Get On The Floor (1 year old) and Summerlove (5 years old) so
nothing new on his long journey over this time.
Teresa & Vera
had 1 new dance called Lookin' Good which was a fun country dance to a classic
Mavericks track you will have heard at the festivals. They only choreographed it
that morning so very good to say that. They also threw in a couple of oldies
such as Quando and I Said I Love You. Craig Bennett released an easy
intermediate pop dance Just Can't Get Enough which was popular. A few different
sections for an easy fun dance. Dee taught one of her new dances to Anastacia
called The Way I See It which was a 64/4 dance with a Motown feel to it and a
nice improver one Lonely Nevermore.
Many hit dances over the
weekend filled the floor. Most notably Francien's Make My Day got everybody up
as did Andrew, Simon & Sheila's In Control, Robbie's We Believe, Alan's
Human-Dancer, Kim's Guantanamera, Craig's Poker Face, Shaz's Insomnia, Dee's
Spotlight & Too Close For Comfort.
Look forward to next years
event with Kate Sala...

SUBJECT: CLASS LAST WEEKFROM: RYAN
IN THE UK
Hi All,
Last week we did 2 of Maggie's new dances that
were released back at Southport. First off, J HO which is a 64/4 Higher
Intermediate dance and the dance of the weekend at Maggie's. The class had great
fun with this one...an original dance and a catchy track. The other was BREATHE
SLOW which is also 64/4 and choreographed to the Cahill Radio Edit by Alesha
Dixon. This was also liked by most of the class - an upbeat pop one along the
lines of Head Phones.
Popular mainstream revision was Maggie's
Issues, Neville and Julie's Alive, and Craig's Poker Face. Popular newline
revision was Scott's Broken Glass and Dan's So Persuasive. All dances are going
well at the moment. Dances during the night were No Need To Rush, What's The
Deal?, Pick It Up, Everything About U, Baila Baila Conmigo, Somethin' Crazy,
Breathe Slow, Make My Day, J Ho, Insomnia, Issues, Alive, Too Close For Comfort,
Broken Glass, In Control, Poker Face, Breathe Slow, J Ho, So
Persuasive.
Cheers,

FROM: linedan...@yahoo.comSUBJECT: Information on creating a line dancing
event
I am a tiny little person with a tiny little
dream of creating a line dancing event that everyone would want to come
to. Here's what I need: How's it start? How much does it
cost? How do I get the great instructors? What do I do? What
about vendors? What about food? Lodging? Pay for those great
instructors? Where do I find time in a calendar year for such a great
event? How many people would I need to help me get it going, keep it
going, and not lose my sanity in the process?
Here is my idea...I
live in beautiful mountains and in the summer it might get to 85 before the
afternoon breeze kicks in and cools it back down. I am in California, in
Big Bear. We have a great big convention center with a motel 6 right
across the street. The convention center has a restaurant inside that has
the BEST food with healthy choices too. My husband is a DJ and I have a
friend who is a DJ as well...What if everyone would want to come to the
mountains when it is blistering hot everywhere else, and have 3 days of line
dancing instruction and dance parties in the evenings? Would it, could it
possibly happen?
This newsletter is the best place that I could
think of to send out my questions and share my dream. I begin every single
day reading this, looking for those pieces of information that will make me a
better teacher, dancer, and person...I look forward to hearing from any and all,
please email me directly...Love, Kathy

SUBJECT:
UPDATE FROM WOZ ON DWTS
FROM:
pal...@bellsouth.net Received
on Tuesday morning:
I got a good sleep last night--I don't know
whether it's due to relief or exhaustion, but my best sleep all week is after
the Monday performance.
I watched a video of the show for the first
time since we started. I was delighted with the segment of me with my Segway
group, thanking fans for their votes [which I thought] turned out great and not
phony. I loved when they briefly showed me dancing with a stranger--as a joke, I
had offered to give dance instruction to anyone who would vote for
me.
I looked at my actual dance. No, it's not great. But it was a
lot FOR ME. I know of one half-beat that I missed when I didn't turn my foot far
enough, but other than that I did it as well as I could. We had lifts and flips
and kept our legs in synch. Did I come across as strong and haughty?
No. Did we have a lot of intricate footwork? No. But what we did, we did
fairly well.
The judges scored us a 12. In our confessional Karina
and I pleaded with them to lower it to a 10 just because 10 sounds like a better
number. (It's a geek thing.)
I always try to keep a strong
direction toward what I think is good, in terms of values. I have heard from
many strangers who have been inspired enough to envision themselves dancing and
enjoying it, and I consider this the best thing about my participation in DWTS.
A lot of average people, many sitting at their computer terminals all day, see
me doing my best on the show and feel a kinship. I'm an example that you
can enjoy it even if you're pushing 60, are overweight, have been injured, and
have two left feet.
But the low scores from the judges pass a
different message to these people: if you are not close to perfection then
it's okay for you to be ridiculed and humiliated. Some people may be so
shy that the mere fear of ridicule would stop them not only from dancing, but
also from doing other things in their lives. This is not a good message to
send.
To end on a high note, the good news is that this is the
third day that I can walk without a limp, and am not having to take
aspirin.
Love to all,
Woz

SUBJECT: BIDEFORD
REPORT
FROM: RYAN
Hi,
Just back from a great weekend at the Durrant House Hotel in Devon with Big
Dave and special guest choreographers Shaz, Dee and MT Groove. The hotel was
nice and the rooms were lovely and modern. The food was OK but the staff could
have been a little merrier. That aside, Dave and Pauline had planned a great
weekend of fun and dancing for us...
Friday night was "Silver" and many dressed in their sparkly tops. The
dancing was an even mix of mainstream and newline playing to the crowd who were
there. Saturday night was "Flashing" (lights!) and we were all given our own
flashy rings and necklaces which made the room look great! Popular mainstream
included Make My Day, Moonlight Kiss, No Need To Rush, Insomnia and Spotlight
amongst others. Popular newline included So Persuasive, Round Round, Think About
It, Somethin' Crazy, Broken Glass and What's The Deal.
Dee taught a great new NC2S called HUSH HUSH. Along the lines of Poetry In
Motion - flows really well to the music and enough to keep you thinking. Dee
also taught her dance COME TO ME which went well. Shaz taught her new funky
dance MAGIC which was very well received. Typical funky Shaz dance with new
steps to a great track by Justin Timberlake. Shaz also taught her dance JUVENILE
which many had already done. MT Groove were up next teaching their new dance to
the classic Puff Daddy remix I'll Be Missing You called NOTORIOUS CHA. As always
with MT dances, the steps were original and worked well with the music. Other
teaches were J HO by Shaz and ANGELS ON THE MOON by MT Groove - both of which
were popular.
Danced until 3:30ish Friday and 4:30ish on Saturday (and losing the hours
sleep!). It was great to do some classic newline dances such as Boo Boo's
Bounce, Buttons, Cold Blooded, Explicit, How Kud U, I Scream, Latin Groove, Let
Me Love You, Playa, Time To Ride, X It Out, A Single Moment, Can't Stand Still,
Crooked Letter Y, Drop The Heat, Get A Grip, Funkalicious, Promiscuous, Smack
Dat, Swing It, Uh Oh, Just Say It, Cadillac Ride, Natural Selection, Tik Tok
Too, Afterglow Cha, Scandalous, Easy, Brucie, Liverpool Fling and Cha Cha
Tonight.
A great weekend : )

SUBJECT:
Danville (Virginia) Dance Invitational FROM: Bonnie
Mathews
linedan...@nc.rr.com
Harold Logan hosted the first of three weekend workshops for 2009 on March
13 and 14. There were about 35 dancers of all levels from Virginia
and North Carolina on the dance floor. While people were arriving and
registering, Mary Kay Johnson, our dj, played requests. Two of these
dances that people picked up on the floor while the steps were called as they
were danced were What A Surprise by Max Perry (easy beginner dance to Neil
Seda's What a Surprise) and Cabo San Lucas by Rep Ghazali, an easy intermediate
level dance (Cabo San Lucas by Toby Keith). The first dance was taught a
little after 10 a.m. and there was open dancing between each instructor's
teaches. Harolds events are for all levels of dancers and therefore all
levels are taught throughout the day, with the high level intermediate to
advanced dances being taught on Sunday.
The workshop began with Harold teaching two dances, LITTLE RED BOOK by Dee
Musk, which the beginners (and everyone else) enjoyed, and ROMEO & JULIET by
Gaye Teather. This is a 32 count, four wall (one tag) easy
intermediate dance that goes to Love Story by Taylor Swift and was a favorite of
the weekend. It was requested many times in open dance. The step
description states that Little Red Book is a floor split for this music so
teaching both choices gives us something to take home to all our class
levels. I was next in the teaching line up and taught SWING-N-CHA by
Patrick Fleming and Zac Detweiller a 64 count, two wall intermediate dance with
no tags or restarts. It is a fusion of Cha and West Coast Swing
which make this dance something different. The music is My Society by
DePhazz and Patrick and Zac did a great job as the steps fit this music just
perfectly. (I noticed Zac is teaching this in Boston this weekend so if
you are looking for something different, give it a try!) Gail Smith did
the last morning teach with RUNAROUND SUE, Rachel McEnaney’s high level beginner
dance to the song of the same name by Dion. This is a dance that was fun
for all levels and Gail had all of us dancing it in a very short time. There was
just enough time left for her to teach LEARNING TO FLY, Christopher Petre’s
4-wall, intermediate dance done to One Step At A Time by Jordin Sparks. No
tags or restarts, but an interesting leg swing in the third eight-count that
makes this dance unique. (This dance gives us a floor split for
Pepper Siquieros’ beginner dance to the same song called One Step at a
Time.) After an hour break for lunch, we resumed the workshop. I
started with EASE ON DOWN, a 64 count easy intermediate dance (one 4-count tag
into a restart) by JP & Bracken Ellis Potter and Rachel McEnaney. It
goes to Michael Jackson’s Ease On Down. Lots of repetition on the
first 8 counts got everyone through the double syncopated vine. The dance
was made for this music—it just flows right along and no one had any issues with
the tag/restart. (Bracken is teaching this one in Boston this
weekend, too, so check it out there.) There was just enough time left to
have some fun and lighten the atmosphere during my teaching slot since it
appeared we all ate more than we should have and were kind of sluggish.
COMIC STRIP (AKA AN ODE TO GUYTON MUNDY) by Zac Detweiller & Jillian Morse,
did the trick. This one is a 32 count 4 wall beginner dance, with 8 counts
of arms—but just arms and no feet--for counts 25-32. Even I can do that,
especially since I couldn’t do three of the four Guyton dances that the arm
movements are from! This one is guaranteed to bring smiles to the
dancers faces—and it did. Matter of fact, we found out you could do this
dance to almost everything—and even if you don’t get up and dance, you can just
sit in your chair and do the arms! (Another teach this weekend in
Boston—if you need to take a break from the higher level dances—go take this one
from Zac.) Gail was up next with Baby Believe, a beautiful, flowing
waltz from Peter & Alison. It’s a 4 wall,
intermediate level dance with no tags or restarts and goes to the song of the
same name by Kristy Lee Cook. There is one spot in the music with a 3
count hold, but no one had any trouble at all just dancing through
it. Her final teach for Saturday was Make My Day by Francien
Sittrop, 32 counts, no tags or restarts. This one is way up on Carol’s
list, so needs no description. Harold finished up the day with Triple M,
which came in second in the pro-choreography contest at Windy City last
year. Choreographed by Max Perry, Michel Perron & Maurice Rowe to You
Keep Me Hanging On by Diana Ross & The Supremes. This is an easy
intermediate level dance with no tags or restarts. Even though it was well
after 4 p.m. when Harold started his teach and we were all worn out from a full
day of open dancing and learning dances, we were able to grasp this one with no
trouble.
It was out for dinner and then back to dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. Mary
Kaye always does a wonderful job of mixing up the requests so that everyone gets
to dance--not just the event dancers. We danced all levels and styles of
dances, from Higher and Higher to Creepin' and from dances that are popular
locally to dances that are danced at all the big events.
Sunday, we began all over again. Harold's events are known for
teaching what the attendees want to learn and Sunday was no exception. It is
also the "anything goes" day of the event. There was a request for I Held
Your Hand by Merete Sevel and Niels Poulsen, which put me first in the teaching
line-up. It's a 96 count A-B advanced dance, but so worth the time to
learn!! Music is My Immortal by Evanescence. A small group of
dancers were on the floor to learn this one and were dancing it in less
than an hour. Hardly a misstep in the group! Gail was up next
with a requested teach of Notice the Danger, by Guyton Mundy and Jordan
Lloyd. This one was requested on Saturday as a teach on Sunday
and Gail did a great job with it, especially since she'd never taught it
before. With a small group of dancers trying to learn this one and
everyone knowing each other, it went very smoothly when we put this dance into
its contra lines. Those of us who just couldn't do arms and feet together
ended up using the arms from Comic Strip instead. (It worked!!)
Finally, Gail did a quick but thorough teach of Insomnia by Shaz Walton (64
counts, 2 walls, intermediate). The turns/turning are almost all to the
left, so the jury is still out for me because I have vertigo and have to do
turns that vary direction, but I plan to work on this one and see what I can
modify since it goes so well to the music (Insomnia by Craig David).
I’m looking forward to doing his all over again on June 21-22!!

SUBJECT: TEXAS HOE-DOWN '09FROM:
monap...@sbcglobal.net
What an awesome event this past weekend at the TEXAS HOE-DOWN in
Fort Worth, TX. It was definitely a twentieth anniversary celebration to
remember. Stop and think a minute how many dance events you can think of
that have made it to the TWENTY YEAR mark! It absolutely speaks volumes
about incredible event directors Jerry, Virginia, Missy, & Judi. They
outdo themselves year after year, and this year was certainly no
exception.
Special to the TEXAS HOE-DOWN this year was the
addition of NTA ACCREDITATION WORKSHOPS with training and testing, and this
addition was EXTREMELY well-received. NTA Dance Committee member Debra
Cleckler from Georgia, assisted by Jim Cleckler, worked non-stop training and
testing teachers and dancers throughout the event!
Line Dances
taught during the weekend were:
BODY CHA (Poulsen) - fun music, friendly to
all skill levels
SURE HOPE YOU MEAN IT (Potter/Ellis)
MY NEXT LOVE
(Poulsen) - gorgeous Fredrik Kempe song, friendly to all skill levels
MARRY
FOR MONEY (Rathbun)
JUNGLE FREAK (Machado/Lorah) - classic, fun, contra
dance, friendly to all skill levels - this one was a big hit in open
dancing
PUT A RING ON IT (Hodgson) - catchy song by Beyonce
RIVER OF LOVE
(Richards)
TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS (Dornstedt) - friendly to all skill
levels
HIDEAWAY CHA (Brady/Davis/Syzmanski) - special class incorporating cha
technique and how to improve your technique for this very classic dance
CRAZY
LOVE (Wallace)
SOMEONE'S SUNSHINE (Fleming) - great class incorporating lilt
technique
POKER FACE (Bennett) - very fun music, a little more challenging,
one easy restart
BOSSY (Perron) - catchy music (I can't get this one out of
my head!)
DREAMS (Mundy/Bennett) - tricky to master dancing on the diagonals,
well-worth the effort
FIRST TIME WALTZ (Morgan) - great class incorporating
rise & fall technique
DUCK SOUP (Trace) - fun little dance
MAKE MY DAY
(Sittrop) - fun steps that fit the fun music
UNBROKEN WALTZ (Knights) - slow,
pretty waltz, friendly to all skill levels
The 2009 TEXAS HOE-DOWN
Line Dance Staff was made up of Bernadette Carmichael, Bob Clanton, Tonya Lied,
Barbara Albright, Linda McDaniel, and Mona Puente. Among many other wow
acts in the Saturday Night Show, Tonya Lied entertained the audience with her
Line Dance Super Star Solo Medley, and sixteen line dancers had a spot on the
program dancing MAKE MY DAY.
The TEXAS HOE-DOWN was once again a
great weekend and has a permanent place on my planner year after
year!

SUBJECT: NTA ACCREDITATION WORKSHOPS HELD
IN FORT WORTH, TXFROM:
monap...@sbcglobal.net Those
of you that know me know I'm very proud of my home state of Texas and my home
town of Fort Worth! Last weekend, Texas dance instructors and Texas
dancers gave me cause to brag even more!
Offered this past weekend
at the Texas Hoe-Down dance event in Fort Worth, TX, were NTA (National Teachers
Association) ACCREDITATION WORKSHOPS for training and testing. These
workshops were SO very well-received by Texas dancers and dance
instructors!
I'm so proud that Texas instructors are
striving to be the best instructors they can be and Texas dancers are striving
to be the best dancers they can be. They want to improve their dancing,
their technique, their teaching abilities, their understanding of all aspects of
dance--from posture to proper terminology, to understanding of different
rhythms, to which foot positions should be used for which movements, to how to
avoid injury...the list goes on and on. Texas dancers and dance
instructors were so hungry for this helpful information and were soaking it up
like sponges. They participated in the Workshops and studied and practiced
and asked questions and went through the testing process and then couldn't wait
for more. Everyone I asked said it was an invaluable experience and they
were so glad they came.
Dancing is an endless learning
process. Not only will we never know it all, but also some aspects of
dancing continue to change. One of the huge benefits of membership in the
NTA organization is that NTA strives to keep its members current with changes
and preferred terminology and helpful hot off the press information. To
find out about joining NTA and/or about participating in NTA ACCREDITATION
WORKSHOPS, go to
