Columbian Exchange
Walk around and talk to people. Find answers to the questions as you talk to your class mates.
1. Find someone who benefited from the Colombian exchange. Who are they and how did they benefit?
2. Find someone who viewed the exchange as a negative event. Who are they and what negative effects did they elaborate on? How did they feel about the exchange?
3. Find a plant– what are they and where did they come from? What impacts have they had in the world?
4. Find a plant from the Americas that is now planted around the world. Why have people around the world planted it?
5. Find an animal that came with the Spanish and had a negative impact on American Indians. What was the animal, why did the Spanish bring it, and what did it do in the Americas?
6. Find an animal that might have had a positive impact. What was the animal and what was the impact?
7. Find someone who disagreed with the Spanish conquests– who is this person and what did they think about the Spanish conquests?
8. Find a disease. What is it? What did it do?
9. Find someone you have never heard of. Who are they and how did they feel about the events we call the Colombian exchange?
10. Find someone/something that may have had an impact on language. What language was introduced, and into what region/area is it now spoken?
1. Francisco Pizzaro took gold , money and other metals from the Incas after conquering the Incas empire. Francisco Roldan gain riches, wealth and power from America. He was a French Fur Trader who benefited from the Columbian Exchange.
2. The Arawak Indians did not benefit from the Columbian exchange because he got killed by the Spanish. The Spanish brought deadly diseases like smallpox that killed him.
3. The sugarcane from Southeast Asia helped Europeans use a lot of sugar and became an important product in trading. Brazil wood came from Brazil and helped the Portuguese make money.
4. Corn is the main crop that spread to the rest of the world.
5. Cows were first brought to Americas from Europe by Columbus. Although cows were an important food source, they led to massive environmental changes in the Americas such as rainforest being cut down so that there is land to raise the cows.
6. Horses helped the Spanish conquered America. Horses are used in battles in Indian civilization.
7. Moctezuma is the emperor of the Aztec empire who disagrees with the Spanish conquests. The Spanish stoned him to death even after he gave them gifts.
8. Measles killed million of natives and is the cousin of smallpox. Smallpox wiped out half of the native populations. This disease help Hernado Cortes conquered the Aztecs and Incas.
9. Olaudah Equiano was a slaved traded in the Columbian Exchange. She was tortured by her owner.
10. When the Portuguese came to Brazil for Brazil wood, people there starts speaking Portguese.
1. Hernan Cortez – Conquered Aztecs, Achieved political power and wealth
2. Huayna Capac- He was an Ica, a ruler of an empire that spanned large parts of South America and was centered in mountains in Peru. It was difficult for the people of his empire to unite and defend themselves
3. Banana – Came from South East Aisa) Provided a new food source from American Indians
4. Tobacco – Came from America. People smoke it even though it is unhealthy
Corn – Mexico and Central America
Sugar cane- South East Asia, European came to America.
5. Horse- bring it for battle and I run around in America and help conquer Americans
6. Cows – brought from Europe, Good to eat
7. Mocte Zuma – Emperor of Aztec Empire, resulted Spanish
8. Small pox – kill half of Native American, runny nose, cough and fever and pain and scars. Decrease population. 27 million people killed 3 million left
9. Guacanagair – Spanish prison, very important person to many people and worship him like king. Been through a lot of problems
10. Brazil wood – Portugal found Brazil woods and they set up the colony and started to speak in Portugal
